Choose material

Before putting linoleum on a wooden floor, you should familiarize yourself with its existing species. The modern market offers products made from:

  • Natural materials. As a base, oils, resins of plant origin are used. It has a high level of wear resistance, an excellent option for the design of those rooms where people with reduced immunity live.
  • PVC This coating is quite common in apartments: about 80% of all goods are produced on the basis of this component - polyvinyl chloride. It consists of fillers, dyes, solvents, plasticizers and other processing aids.
  • Alkyd resin. Gliftal linoleum has excellent heat and sound insulation characteristics, but is more fragile and more susceptible to kinks.
  • Nitrocellulose. Linoleum from cellulose treatment products has excellent moisture resistant properties, it is flexible and elastic.
  • Rubber. This roll material is made of two layers, has good elasticity and water resistance.

Installation of linoleum

Depending on the application, laying linoleum on a wooden floor can be:

  • Domestic. It is used in residential premises, for example, in order to lay linoleum with your own hands on the floor in Khrushchev. The material is chosen with medium performance and low price.Often it is not covered with a protective layer or its thickness is not more than 0.3 mm.
  • Semi-commercial. The material used has a more solid base and a practical top layer; it serves as a floor covering in the domestic sector, as well as in hotels and small offices.
  • Commercial. It is used in commercial centers, as well as in other places with a high degree of passage.

Man has always strived for comfort, perfected the technology of manufacturing flooring. Now there are many options that can be used in a house or apartment, but before installation, you should pay attention to buying the right material. What recommendations should I use? So this is:

  • The choice depends on the type of room. A semi-commercial option is usually chosen for corridors, hallways, and kitchens. In the bedrooms or living rooms, household linoleum is spread.
  • The width of the sheets. It is the normal width that allows you to correctly place linoleum on a wooden floor, because it is much more difficult to lay two sheets than one.
  • The thickness of the material. It is preferable to choose linoleum with a thickness of at least 3 mm.

Before laying linoleum on an uneven floor with your own hands, you need to prepare the surface, it must be perfectly even and smooth. Otherwise, the material will lie unevenly, and in the place of protrusions and tubercles, it will rub faster and be damaged.

Surface preparation

To prevent deformation of the flooring, you need to not only know how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor, but also seriously approach the stage of surface preparation.

Removing Redundant Items

Many apartment owners are interested in the question: is it possible to lay linoleum on a wooden floor, this is quite realistic, however, before the procedure, the surface should be freed from unnecessary parts, the baseboards should be removed. The paint layer is removed with a spatula, for the best effect, it is better to heat the surface using a building hair dryer.

Strength test

Before laying linoleum on a wooden floor, you need to make sure the strength and good condition of the boards. The creaking boards are nailed securely to the lags, and also come with a tree moving in different directions. If rotten areas are found, then the boards are completely replaced. Self-tapping screws and nails are used for fixing, they should be driven in such a way that their hats are deepened by 0.5 mm relative to the surface.

Closing holes

Do not lay linoleum on a wooden floor with your own hands if there are holes and cracks more than 5 mm in it. They are carefully patched with patches. Chips and other surface defects should be carefully puttyed.

Surface alignment

For alignment, a manual or electric planer is used, as well as a grinding tool for parquet. Many experts recommend using sheets of chipboard, fiberboard before laying linoleum on a wooden floor. They help to level the surface if large differences are indicated on it. For rooms with high humidity, it is preferable to install waterproof material under the linoleum on a wooden floor.

The sheets are laid with brickwork, that is, with a displacement in the floor of the sheet, we leave a gap of 1 cm near the walls, which is subsequently sealed with insulating material. The sheets must be glued so that there are no gaps between them.

We apply PVA glue to the cleaned surface of the floor, into which we first add building gypsum. The result should be a mixture of consistency of thick sour cream. For this purpose, you can use mastic. When laying sheets, it is necessary to provide fastenings to the floor: self-tapping screws are fixed every 15-20 cm. Next, various irregularities are aligned with a planer, and the joints formed are covered with polystyrene foam.

After the plywood dries, it is treated with hot linseed oil or covered with a layer of quick-drying floor paint. After complete drying, you can make linoleum flooring on a wooden floor.
For easier alignment, some masters use a self-leveling mixture. It is applied to dry surfaces treated with a primer for best adhesion.

Debris removal

It is very important after the end of each stage to remove the remaining garbage, sawdust, for this you can use a vacuum cleaner. The surface is thoroughly washed and drained.

Material preparation

Before gluing linoleum to a wooden floor, it is necessary to withstand the material at room temperature in a straightened form for a couple of days: it will stretch, become smooth, and bends and folds will disappear.

If kinks have formed on the surface of the material, we put the boards of the book on them until the deformations are eliminated. If it was not possible to eliminate the deficiency, then it is better to replace this segment. Equally important is the humidity in the room where the work is done: it should be in the range of 40-60%.

How to lay linoleum in an apartment? For this, of course, the right amount of flooring should be provided. The dimensions of the room are measured, the protrusions under the door and windows are taken into account. To the obtained measurements of the length and width of the room, 10 cm are added as a reserve. If you need to spread linoleum with a pattern, then a larger amount of stock should be provided.

We lay linoleum in the direction of the line of light, and if there are joints, it is better to place them in the middle of the board.

Methods for laying flooring

There are several ways to properly lay linoleum on a wooden floor. Depending on the situation and size of the room, one of the following applies:

  • Without the use of glue. This is the easiest and fastest way, allowing you to independently lay the flooring in a room whose area does not exceed 12 square meters. It should be noted that in rooms with high traffic the material will wear out faster and waves can also form.
  • Bonding with adhesive tape. The tape perfectly holds the coating, so you will not have to fix it with other compounds. A double-sided adhesive tape is fastened around the perimeter of the room. Then the protective film is removed and with gentle movements the edges of the material are alternately stacked on the tape, for this you can bend the roll in half, and then fix the flooring in turn. Such laying will protect the material from wear, as its edges will be laid and fixed, however, after removing linoleum, traces of adhesive tape will remain on the floor.
  • Adhesive by glue. It provides durability to the coating, can be used in large rooms, but it is the most complex and time-consuming.

The latter option is the most practical, but how to implement the plan correctly?

Stacking

The algorithm for mounting linoleum in one sheet includes a certain sequence of actions:

  1. The sheet is folded in half and placed on one half of the room.
  2. A layer of the adhesive mixture is applied to the floor surface using a brush or roller.
  3. After 15 minutes, the bent side of the sheet is fixed on the missed area, all the bulges are carefully aligned.
  4. The unfinished half is turned over and the remaining traces of glue on the floor are cleaned with a rag.
  5. Actions are repeated with the second half.
  6. The surface dries up during the day, then skirting boards are installed around the perimeter of the room.

As you can see, the procedure is quite simple, so even a novice master can handle it.

Two-sheet linoleum mounting algorithm

This installation is used if it was not possible to find the material of the required width, as well as to cover the floor surface in large rooms. The following steps are performed in stages:

  1. The sheets are overlapped, the width of the two-layer strips should be at least 10 cm.
  2. When unfolding linoleum, you should carefully monitor the coincidence of the picture.
  3. The sheets are attached to the base similarly to the previous case.
  4. Both layers are carefully cut in the middle of the overlap. It turns out the perfect combination of paintings.
  5. Joints are glued with glue or by cold welding. In order not to damage the edges of the material, they are covered with masking tape.

Linoleum is a practical floor covering that is easy to lay on your own. Perfect for those apartment owners who want to save money and get a nice and visually attractive surface.
