One of the problems faced by owners of small-sized apartments is the constant lack of space for placing full-fledged furniture. An excellent solution would be to buy compact or transformable furniture, and above all, such as a small bed. Today on the market there are many types of small and folding beds, sofas and sofa beds, both single and double, so it is not difficult to choose among them just such a product that will be most suitable for your interior and at the same time will be excellent sleeping place for you personally and your children.
Folding beds are known to many, because in our country the housing problem has been standing for a long time, but today those who live in spacious dwellings are often interested in convertible furniture. Extra square meters will always find application in the presence of imagination: they can equip a whole gym, or arrange a greenhouse, or turn them into a creative studio of the artist.
The use of modern materials and accessories allowed designers to develop a huge number of options for folding sofas and beds, based on the most daring ideas of combining furniture that previously seemed difficult to compatible. Many serious manufacturers today offer custom-made unique designs of furniture with variable geometry. At the same time, a good folding sofa or a transforming bed for a small apartment or a studio apartment is just a find. Next, several types of compact furniture will be considered, which allows for a full sleep, both for children and adults.
Wardrobe bed
The option when a closet is used to hide a bed in it is very common. In this case, the berth can be fixed in two ways:
- with a horizontal arrangement;
- with a vertical arrangement.
When the bed rises, it turns into a wall of the cabinet, which for masking can be equipped with:
- a mirror;
- small shelves;
- decorative panels, etc.
Such a bed can be a design from one "false" wardrobe or be part (module) of a large furniture set, in which you can hide not only single but also double beds.
For sleeping or just relaxing, the cabinet wall with a berth is lowered, and it, resting on the floor with its folding legs, turns into a horizontal comfortable bed that can provide complete relaxation. Additionally, in cabinets containing inside a sleeping place for one person or double beds, there are niches and shelves for linen, belts for fixing the mattress and the bed as a whole, lighting. A wardrobe bed is that option of universal small-sized furniture which can be installed both in a drawing room, and in a nursery, and in a small bedroom.
Bed in a niche wall
This option is well suited for the living room.The sleeping place hidden in the wall is very useful to you if a guest or relative unexpectedly arrives, and it will be necessary to create conditions for him so that he can spend the night with comfort. If there is a large section of the wall not covered by furniture, you can build niches of the right size even for double transformer beds.
Sofa bed with table function
This option is convenient for both the nursery and the mini-cabinet, as it makes it possible to combine a sleeping place with a working area or with space for playing and practicing with a child. When folded, such a sofa bed has a countertop on which you can work with a laptop, draw, sculpt or assemble models of cars from the designer.
Armchair bed
This is the best choice for the owner of a one-room apartment. Such chairs are very convenient for the individual use by its owner, and if a child lives with you, or if you need to provide overnight to a guest who decides to spend the night with you. The design is always simple and easy to fold out. Some models have a compartment at the bottom where bedding can fit.
Pouffe bed
This is the furniture for the smallest rooms. It can be used in a one-room apartment, as well as in halls and in nurseries. Such a folding pouf looks like an ordinary pouf, but at night it turns into a single bed.
Transformer "three in one"
This is a great way to solve the problem of limited space for small apartments. In its original form, such furniture looks like a comfortable sofa, the soft back of which is formed by furniture pillows. The sides, which are a solid solid frame, are equipped with a rotary mechanism, due to the presence of which they can be rotated 180 °.
The sides are connected by a furniture plate, not visible when the sofa is assembled. This furniture plate, hidden behind the pillows-backs, can become in the future the table top. This sofa in its lower part has a niche in which additional rectangular soft elements are stored.
Transformation Options:
- Folded state. An ordinary sofa with a soft back made of sofa cushions.
- Bed. It turns out when the niche is extended, as a result of which the second half of the sleeping soft place appears.
- Sofa table After the pillows are removed, it becomes possible to raise the countertop plane fixed on the axis, connected in turn, as previously mentioned, to the sidewalls. The result is a table resting on the sides of the sofa and having such dimensions that it can even be used as a dining room.
The presented version of the “three in one” transformer is an example of a successful solution for transforming furniture with a fairly simple construction of transformation mechanisms.
In the children's room, as compared with other rooms of the apartment, optimization of space use is most needed, especially when there is more than one child in the family. To solve this problem, systems have been developed that provide for the use of transformers and allow you to create two separate berths. There are simple similar models of furniture that have a sliding mattress on wheels from under a sofa or a bed, and more complex ones that can be built into wardrobes or walls, and simply as a bunk bed.
Often, traditional materials are used as materials for the manufacture of such furniture:
- tree;
- MDF;
- Chipboard.
But for transformable furniture, especially such as a baby bed, durable and lightweight synthetic composite materials are more preferable.
Cots can be transformed in a variety of ways:
- a berth with wheels is removed under the podium (playground);
- several alternating beds are assembled in one place;
- the bed turns into a table.
Attic beds
In such a furniture complex, its main element is a sleeping place (often a folding type), which is usually located at a height of about 1-1.8 meters from the floor, while the space below it can be:
- storage system;
- work zone;
- game Zone;
- bottom bed.
Depending on the model of the loft bed, such a furniture group can be equipped with:
- shelves;
- wardrobes;
- pedestals
- drawers;
- work table.
Some items can be mobile and used separately. A person is raised “to the attic” to the bed either by the special ladder included in the kit, or in some cases, the storage systems perform the function of steps.
Advantages and disadvantages of transformers
Transformer beds and sofas are enduringly popular among adherents of rationality.
The advantages of such designs are obvious:
- extra bed is freed in the nursery, as the bed in which the child sleeps can be transformed into a table;
- such furniture is usually quite simple to fold and unfold, while the implementation of these procedures requires, as a rule, no more than two minutes;
- the sizes and models of transformers can be very different, which allows you to choose from them the most suitable for a particular case;
- beds are often equipped with an orthopedic mattress;
- you can quickly arrange a bed when there is no extra bedroom available;
- small transformers can in most cases be installed on any vacant area of the apartment;
- the cost of such devices is in the range accessible to many families.
Disadvantages of transformers:
- with frequent use of transforming beds, they quickly wear out, and first of all the elements of mechanical fastening of parts fail;
- transformable furniture is not suitable for use by people with physical disabilities or with disabilities (elderly, children, as well as sick and disabled people);
- for a bed, which is tidying into a niche, a strong capital wall is required, since weak interior partitions may not withstand a significant periodic load.
Varieties of mechanisms
Designs of mechanisms for folding sofas and beds have at least ten versions, and each of them has certain advantages, while having its own drawbacks. However, mainly transformed furniture is equipped with these two types of swing-out mechanical devices:
- Retractable mechanism. It is safe and easy to use, and in the models containing it, in most cases there are departments for bedding.
- Folding mechanism. It is dangerous when it is used to transform beds, since a heavy structural element of furniture raised upside down can fall and injure a person, for example, pinching an arm or kicking a leg. Although the beds attached to the wall and help to significantly save space, being assembled, but still using them requires certain precautions.
The folding mechanisms are also divided into these two types:
- Spring mechanisms. They are the most durable, as well as reliable, due to their extreme simplicity: there is nothing to break in the spring. However, there is a drawback: in order to perform the transformation procedure, some efforts are required, and therefore they are not recommended for elderly and physically weak people.
- Gas lift devices. They have lower reliability, but if properly operated, they serve for a long time. Furniture equipped with such mechanisms can be laid out without significant effort. The disadvantage of a gas lift is that the folding type beds equipped with it are more expensive than with a spring mechanism.
Modern tendencies
Transforming furniture today has become a fashion trend, and there is a fairly simple explanation for this: real estate is expensive. Many people who are at the beginning of their careers cannot afford luxury mansions and apartments, and they have to be content with small-sized apartments and studio apartments. However, the desire to turn them into full-featured, comfortable and interesting housing makes designers in many countries look for new non-standard solutions in the development of furniture, and first of all the most necessary, such as beds and sofas.
Today, some transformers use quite expensive pneumatic mechanisms that allow the assembly and disassembly of folding furniture without the need to expend significant physical effort. Sometimes just a simple click on the remote control button is enough to start the transformation process. Often this is perceived by many as an element of furniture of the future.
Of course, the most interesting models of self-propelled systems that are controlled by remote control can be seen only at international exhibitions devoted to modern furniture, but more and more of these unique exhibits can already be seen in ordinary stores. Moreover, prices for such products are becoming more affordable every year.
