Increasingly, wall and floor shelves are used in the kitchen interior, replacing kitchen drawers. They are more compact and easy to install. In addition, unlike bulky drawers, wall shelves do not clutter the kitchen space, preserve the size of the room and allow you to create fresh interiors.
From the outside it may seem that the floor, and especially the hanging shelves for the kitchen, are not suitable for storing utensils and other equipment. But with the right material, the shelves withstand a large load.
Especially popular are shelving with glass and open shelves in the kitchen, in which dishes and other items are in sight and become part of the interior.
Shelves in the kitchen
The kitchen is equipped with wall shelves and racks. In most cases, shelves use:
- Instead of hanging cabinets. This is especially true in a narrow elongated room, where hanging cabinets look rough and take up a lot of space. Wall shelves located in the upper part of the kitchen will contain all the necessary things, while preserving the space. Furthermore, shelves can be either open or closed, with or without glass.
- As additional elements connecting the cabinets or filling the free spaces between the cabinet and the wall. And plastic shelves can become indispensable dividers in racks and cabinets.
- Over the table. Narrow shelves can be a convenient storage of seasonings and spices.
- Like decorative elements. Wall shelves serve as a stand for flowers, vases, candles and other interesting objects. A kitchen with open shelves fits into any style: ethno, provence, classic or modern.
How to choose a shelf?
Hinged shelves for the kitchen need to be selected, given the general design of the interior. In this case, they will perform not only a utilitarian function, but will become part of a single composition.
It’s not enough to pick up shelves on a wall of a suitable color and shape. Due attention must be paid to the choice of material so that all kitchen furniture creates a harmonious picture. It is unlikely that plastic shelves in the interior of the kitchen will advantageously beat a wooden suite. In addition, the material of the future shelf depends on its purpose. The greater the load, the more reliable the material should be.
Wooden
Kitchen owners in the Provence style or in the classic interior should take a closer look at the wooden shelves. They combine practicality and a pleasant appearance. Wooden shelves are reliable and, despite their low weight, withstand a large number of heavy dishes. A variety of colors, ornaments on the surface of the shelves allow you to choose the perfect options for almost any kitchen. Wooden shelves can be closed with glass.
Of course, wood products also have their drawbacks. Frequent contact with water and insects can cause significant damage. But the shelves treated with a special solution, this fate does not threaten.
Metal
Shelves made of metal fit perfectly into modern interiors. As a rule, they are distinguished by thin fixtures and refinement, which will look especially good in a high-tech style kitchen. A metal shelf can be used for heavy objects, while it itself is lightweight.They have practically no disadvantages: they are durable, they are not afraid of moisture and temperature drops.
Plastic
The range of shelves made of plastic is striking in its scope. A wide range of colors and a variety of shapes allows you to choose plastic shelves for every taste. And the low price makes them an ideal option for a budget decor.
Plastic shelves are very light, but do not differ in special durability. They are not suitable for storing basic kitchen utensils and heavy utensils. But plastic shelves can be used as decorative or as dividers in cabinets and drawers.
Glass
Glass shelves add elegance and sophistication to the interior. Glass shelves hanging in the air look very impressive. Despite the apparent fragility, glass shelves are quite durable. To confidently rely on such a shelf, choose glass products with a thickness of at least 6-8 mm.
Glass shelves are not suitable for storing bulky dishes. But glasses, crystal products and decorative elements can be safely put on these fragile-looking shelves.
Stone
Stone shelves in the interior of the kitchen are rarely used. This is a very stylish piece of furniture that adds chic to the room. They will be appropriate in luxurious interiors in combination with countertops or floors made of the same material. Despite its strength, stone shelves are used for decorative purposes to store beautiful dishes. The disadvantages of shelves made of stone include a lot of weight, which makes them unacceptable to use in a room with drywall walls.
DIY shelves
Floor and wall shelves can be made with your own hands. This will require:
- material: plywood or wood;
- tools: drill, jigsaw, screwdriver, self-tapping screws, glue and sandpaper;
- some free time.
Having prepared, you can start creating shelves. We draw the part on the prepared material and carefully saw it out with a jigsaw, rounding the corners. We pass sandpaper around the edges, and proceed to painting the future shelf. It remains to attach the original corners, and you can hang a new shelf on the wall.
Hinged shelves and open shelves that are correctly inscribed in the interior of the kitchen will help to create a unique design, while remaining a practical and convenient solution for storing kitchen equipment. The material from which the shelves are made is a determining factor in the selection.
