In today's abundance, it is quite difficult to choose kitchen furniture, because there are so many not only beautiful, but also really high-quality materials. Modern and classic MDF kitchens are an excellent solution for those who prefer to use high-quality materials, but do not overpay. The stylish kitchen is distinguished by its good performance and allows you to choose the perfect color and shape. In addition, kitchens made of painted MDF or wood furniture will cost less than wooden products. However, such furniture has both its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages and disadvantages
A fiberboard kitchen has many advantages. The main one is moisture resistance. Subject to the rules of operation and maintenance, such a kitchen is able to serve for many years without loss of external and operational qualities.
There are other advantages of the kitchen from MDF, thanks to which this material is used for the manufacture of kitchen sets. These include:
- Antiseptic properties of the material. The body of a kitchen made of MDF does not collapse under the influence of mold and bacteria. Microorganisms do not live on such a surface, which is a significant advantage for the room in which food is prepared and consumed.
- Ecological cleanliness. To produce the material, toxic or chemical substances are not used, therefore the material is safe for the body. Urea resin is used for bonding the material, which is not harmful to humans.
- Ability to create any form and configuration. The material has a fine structure, which makes it possible to create curved parts of facades and other intricate details of kitchen furniture, so the design of a kitchen made of MDF is fresh and beautiful.
The cost of such kitchens is low and significantly inferior to the products of their natural wood. At the same time, it is possible to order a wood-like kitchen, which perfectly fits into the classic interior of the room.
Despite the obvious advantages, such kitchens also have disadvantages. The main disadvantages include:
- Flammable. When accessing open flame material, the material quickly ignites. However, to minimize the risk of fire from gas or electrical equipment, the design of such a kitchen is carefully thought out.
- Fear of mechanical damage. Facades of MDF for the kitchen are soft and plastic. This facilitates the manufacturing process, but can lead to cracks and breakages from strong impacts and significant loads.
These are all material flaws. However, you can get rid of them when buying quality furniture and proper care for it.
Types of coating for kitchens MDF
Direct or corner MDF kitchens are far from the main decision when choosing. The most important thing is how the fibreboard is covered. The operational and external characteristics of the kitchen set depend on what the stove is covered with. The main types of coverage:
- Film-coated MDF kitchens. In this case, a film of the desired color and texture is glued to the facade. Film kitchens are most often chosen for the durability of the coating to be erased, and also due to their low cost. They can be bright or pastel, with a pattern or plain.
- Plastic coating. The facades of kitchens covered with sheets of plastic retain their color and shape for a long time, and are resistant to temperature extremes and mechanical stresses. For plastic coating, dozens of color options are offered.
- Kitchens from veneered MDF. The facade of the kitchen is pasted over with thin sheets of veneer, which is selected by color and texture. This is the best way to make wood furniture. Such furniture practically does not differ from products from natural massif. Veneered veneer allows you to recreate the texture and color of walnut, oak and other valuable species. This facade is environmentally friendly and easy to maintain. Visually, it’s even difficult to distinguish natural walnut or oak from high-quality veneered MDF.
- Enamel. In this case, the facade can be painted in a wide range of colors and shades. The surface is painted in several layers, after which it is ground and varnished. Such a glossy MDF kitchen has a rich color that does not fade when exposed to direct sunlight. Another advantage of a painted surface is that it does not absorb water and grease. You can order a variety of models in wood or bright and saturated colors.
- Acrylic. This option belongs to the middle price category. In this case, the facades are covered with high density acrylic sheets. Advantages include environmental cleanliness of the material, as well as its resistance to mechanical damage. Acrylic is the best material for a glossy MDF kitchen. The furniture is saturated with a deep and bright color or delicate shades of white, and also has a glossy mirror surface.
- A separate view can distinguish kitchens from MDF with photo printing. They can be made both on the basis of acrylic sheets and film coatings.
What to look for when choosing
The kitchen is the main room in the house, so it is extremely important that the furniture suite meets all the requirements of safety, durability and strength. At the same time, kitchen furniture must comply with the design of the room.
When choosing a kitchen from MDF, you need to pay attention to the quality of the material, the coating of facades, design and accessories. Key points to consider when buying:
- The thickness of the material. You should not save on this parameter. The optimal thickness of the base, which is decorated with a film, is 1.6 cm. When decorating facades with plastic or acrylic, the thickness of the material should be about 1.8 cm. A film coating should be applied on both sides of the facade.
- Type of coverage. In this case, you can choose veneer, plastic, acrylic, film or enamel. From the choice of coating will depend on the durability, wear resistance, appearance and cost of the product.
- Design and color. One-piece designs or individual modules can be ordered. Before ordering, you should decide on the design of furniture and the room as a whole. White kitchens are suitable for a classic interior, while colored kitchens are suitable for a modern one. The glossy kitchen of the MDF vanilla color is an excellent solution for any interior. This also applies to furniture with imitation of natural wood.
- Manufacturer. The quality of furniture, its durability and appearance will depend on this indicator, so you should not trust the manufacture of furniture to unverified companies. In this case, the risk of getting low-quality products is too high.
- Features of operation. When choosing a cover for furniture, you should also take into account the individual characteristics of operation. Steam, high temperature and high humidity can negatively affect the condition of the facades, so you should choose resistant to moisture and temperature coatings, if the furniture is located close to the oven and stove.
MDF is a strong, durable and affordable material. However, for a quality kitchen, it is necessary to give preference only to a quality coating that will withstand operational loads, and also fits perfectly into the interior of the room.
