Hall in Provence style: design secrets (27 photos)
Content
Provence is one of the most soft and comfortable types of interior decoration. Despite the apparent simplicity, the Provence-style design requires considerable effort and special attention to detail to create an impressive and sophisticated interior.
The entrance hall is the face of the apartment, because what impression the guests will have regarding the rest of the house depends on the design and style of the entrance area.
The design of the hallway in the Provence style will not require significant material and financial costs due to the need to design a small area. If there is a decision in the decoration of the entire space of the apartment in this style, you need to prepare for considerable expenses. To avoid this, but at the same time create a harmonious interior, you can use a combination of Provence with the style of shabby chic, rustic or country, a combination with other directions will bring dissonance to the interior.
Color scheme
Making a small hallway in the Provence style is an interesting and partly rational solution, because the refreshing color palette, typical for use in this direction, visually increases the area of the entrance zone, making it easier and more spacious. The color palette of Provence consists of warm, pastel shades: beige, mint, pale pink, cream, light blue, muted yellow, olive flowers, while there should not be any contrasts. The main color is white. Matte black helps to accentuate.
The ornament of the wall covering, like textiles, is made in the form of a small unobtrusive pattern: flowers, cages, narrow stripes.
The Provence-style entrance hall does not tolerate color excesses: red, terracotta, saturated yellow or green colors can only be used as small patches. The task of bright accents is to stand out against a beige or white background without flowing into each other.
The flooring should have the color of natural materials: stone, wood, light brick.
Decoration materials
When decorating a hall in the Provence style, only natural materials are used: wood, stone, ceramics, metal. Laminate, plastic, linoleum are not acceptable for this direction. Finishing each type of surface has its own characteristics.
Ceiling
The interior of the hallway in the Provence style categorically does not accept the methods of decorating the ceiling surface that are popular today - a stretch ceiling, suspended, using plastic panels. The ceiling should be plastered, leveled and painted with a white matte paint. Milk, cream shades are also suitable. It is better to refuse to use ceiling beams in the hallway so as not to burden the space.
Walls
As a wall covering, the Provencal style does not include the use of ordinary paper or vinyl wallpaper, since this contradicts the principles of design in this direction. The walls are painted, covered with decorative plaster, wooden slats and panels, as well as brick, stone.
A combination of textures and shades is often used, the predominant of which is white. The plaster coating is usually embossed.
Due to the fact that Provence provides for a connection with a rustic theme, its highlight is the surface finish with some scuffs, scratches that create the effect of antiquity. The walls should not have a perfectly smooth surface, so the plaster often looks careless, sometimes with peeking areas of brickwork or stone.
Wooden wall panels with small scuffs will give the hallway interior a special charm.
In addition to wood, stone, plaster, Provence provides for wall decoration with textiles. The classic combination is a textile finish with a small, unobtrusive pattern and wood paneling. Originality and French charm in the hallway will add a fresco depicting the province or a fake window overlooking the lavender fields.
Floor
A practical and appropriate style of flooring, which should have a hallway in the style of Provence, is tile or stone. It is better if the texture of the stone will hint at many years of operation, for example, to have chips and scratches. In this case, you can combine tiled masonry with a wooden floor. An old parquet board is an ideal option corresponding to the canons of Provence. If you feel like updating the flooring, you just need to apply a new protective coating to the board without interfering with its appearance.
Furniture selection
Furniture in the hallway in the Provence style should have signs of time in any detail: it can be shabby door leafs, cabinet legs, a cracked countertop, slightly cracked lacquer coating of facades and so on. To give the furniture for the hallway the effect of antiquity, you can use craquelure lacquer. It is applied to the surface of the furniture, then painted. After drying, the surface is covered with small or large cracks.
The basic rules for choosing furniture in the Provence style hall are as follows:
- No massive furniture. The ideal solution is a small chest of light colors with elegant metal handles. A modern wardrobe with a mirrored door will bring a discord to the design of the hallway in the style of Provence.
- The presence of a miniature sofa made of wood or metal with forging elements. A complement to it are textile pillows of a soft color or with a small floral ornament. If there is very little space in the lobby, an elegant wooden chair or stool will fit in well.
- The presence of forged elements. This can be an elegant frame to the mirror, cabinet and chest of drawers accessories, shelves, door handles, key holders, etc.
- Wooden front door, at least from the inside.
- An open clothes hanger with metal hooks and open shelves on which you can place wicker boxes for storing hats and accessories.
- Shoe stand, bench seat.
- Umbrella stand.
- The modular hallway of Provence consists of all the necessary style items. If the hallway area allows you to accommodate all of the above furniture, it is best to purchase it with one set so that there are no external differences between the individual items.
Decor and lighting
An important component of the Provencal style is the decor, the objects of which distinguish this direction from everyone else. Firstly, it is textiles: pillows, rugs made of natural materials, soft seats on benches and banquets.
Secondly, a characteristic feature of Provence is the presence of numerous figurines (clay, wooden, metal, ceramic), candlesticks, decorative birdcages made of thin openwork metal, lanterns. Accessories such as empty photo frames, carved caskets, baskets, mirrors in wooden or metal frames add a special charm to the interior. In addition, the interior is decorated with floor vases with dried plants and flowers, as well as living bouquets. Flowering plants in this case should not be knocked out from the general theme, i.e. it should be delicate, simple flowers. In general, everything that creates a rural flavor fits into the interior, decorated in the Provence style.
Lighting plays a special role in the design of the hallway. The hall needs bright lighting, preferably natural, but in most cases it is difficult to implement, therefore, in the Provence style, central lighting is usually used in the form of a shod chandelier and additional sconces on the walls. You can also use the backlight mirror frame. Characteristic material for the fixtures: glass, wood, forged metal with patina.
Provence is often confused with the country style. It must be borne in mind that the difference between them is that Provence is more tender, light, airy than country, using a large amount of rough wood and metal.
