Drywall: We study the varieties and features of the application

Drywall as a universal finishing material is a canvas with a gypsum core and outer cardboard layers. Varieties of products are actively used in the arrangement of walls and ceilings of premises for various purposes, the erection of arched structures and partitions with curved lines, the lining of communication channels, fireplace portals. By enriching the gypsum base with modifying compounds and impregnating the cardboard with special solutions, gypsum-board materials with certain functional characteristics are produced.

Drywall Classification

Gypsum-based finishing material is classified into several categories. Varieties of drywall depending on the structural characteristics:
  • normal - GKL - a universal finish without specific properties;
  • moisture resistant - GKLV - is allocated by small hygroscopicity in comparison with usual drywall. The core composition is saturated with silicone granules and antiseptic additives;
  • refractory - GKLO - gypsum base reinforced with fiberglass, provided with special additives from combustion;
  • moisture resistant and fireproof - GKLVO - is characterized by high resistance to high humidity and fire resistance.
Varieties of drywall for use:
  • wall - performed in a thickness of 12.5 mm, relevant as an affordable material for finishing smooth surfaces. With this option, drywall decorate interior walls, partitions, niches;
  • ceiling - has a thickness of 9.5 mm, is used in the casing of the main ceiling, the installation of suspended ceilings in rooms with a humidity level of not more than 70%;
  • arched - has a thickness of 6.5 mm, designed for arched solutions of any complexity. It is noteworthy that a dry sheet provides a bending radius of at least 1000 mm, and when wet this indicator is 300 mm;
  • acoustic - the back side of the canvas is equipped with a sound-absorbing coating, holes with a diameter of about 1 cm are made on the front surface. Acoustic gypsum board cannot be putty, but paint can be applied. The material is relevant for the design of walls and ceilings of recording studios and other rooms where sound insulation is necessary.
Varieties of drywall by type of edge and installation features:
  • straight edge - PC - seams are not foreseen;
  • refined edge - UK - the docking line before the putty is equipped with a reinforcing tape;
  • semicircular edge on the front side - PLC - puttying of joints is provided;
  • semicircular and sophisticated edge on the front side - PLUK - the joint lines are reinforced before puttying;
  • rounded edge - ЗК - puttying of joints without reinforcing is performed.
Choosing the right finish option, you must carefully study the catalog with current information and consult with specialists in construction and repair.

Features of the use of drywall

In the repair and decoration works, types of drywall are used depending on the structural properties. GKL - ordinary drywall - gray canvas with blue markings. The material is intended for walls and ceilings in rooms with a low level of humidity, as it is able to absorb excess moisture from the air and give it back when the microclimate is dry. Application in an environment with a high level of humidity is fraught with deformation of the drywall and mold. GKLV - moisture resistant finish - green with blue marking. Designed for cladding wall and ceiling surfaces in rooms with a high coefficient of humidity, is also relevant in the design of window slopes. Silicone granules in a gypsum composition provide low moisture absorption, and antiseptic additives are designed to resist the formation of microorganisms. At the same time, GKLV does not apply to moisture-proof materials, it is simply able to tolerate environmental humidity well. Using moisture-proof linens when arranging a bathroom or kitchen, they perform protection with the application of waterproof putty / primer / paint. GKLO - refractory drywall - gray canvas with red marking. Feature Overview:
  • the gypsum core is reinforced with fiberglass;
  • has refractory impregnation;
  • It is used in the decoration of industrial premises with an increased risk of fire, communication shafts, cladding ducts, fireplace portals, electrical panels.
The refractory finish is also relevant in the arrangement of fireproof metal door leafs and the design of the attic space around the chimneys. GKLVO is a moisture-resistant type of drywall base - green with a red marking. The material is intended for facing surfaces in rooms with a high coefficient of humidity and fire hazard.Moisture-resistant gypsum board is relevant for lining bath complexes in the decoration of the bathroom and kitchen. Gypsum plasterboard front - GKLF - a cloth of yellow color. The material is intended for exterior cladding, it is resistant to weathering. Considering drywall as a finish, it is worth considering the low strength of the material: with significant mechanical impact, dents or breakdowns form on the canvas. It is also important that the plasterboard sheathing occupies a lot of usable area.
