A modern summer cottage has long been no longer like a shed for storing inventory. Today, owners of summer cottages strive to make a beautiful and comfortable suburban housing for the whole summer out of a summer house. And, accordingly, think over the interior design, conducive to a leisurely summer vacation away from noisy megacities. Folk styles, which include: country, Provence, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, most organically look in a country setting.
In our country, the so-called rural style has become more widespread, reminding us of our grandmother's vacations and free rural life. It is characterized by an abundance of handmade textiles: bedspreads, rugs, drapes, and, of course, curtains. What curtains to choose for a country house, and how to sew them yourself, professional designers will tell.
How to choose fabric for country curtains
First of all, the color and texture of the fabric should be selected for the general color scheme, so that the curtains are in harmony with the interior of the country house. It is advisable to take into account some more important points when choosing fabric:
- The location of the windows. For the southern and western windows in the summer heat you will need a dense light fabric that reflects the sun's rays. In this case, the house will heat less in the evening. For eastern and northern windows, this function is not so relevant, but to maintain a single ensemble, dense fabric can be provided for all windows.
- Fabric properties. For country curtains, any one is suitable - cotton, linen, synthetic or mixed. Natural materials will look more organic in a rustic style, but synthetic or mixed materials are stronger, easy to wear, wrinkle a little and hardly burn out. What properties to prefer - the hostess herself will choose.
- The size of the room. For a small room, you should prefer a light fabric, plain or with a small pattern. In a spacious room with large windows will look any.
For rolled or Roman curtains, you need a dense fabric that keeps its shape, and for curtains on the veranda or in the arbor, take the most durable material that does not suffer from rain and wind.
Choosing a design for country curtains
The cut of curtains for a summer residence is not distinguished by pretentiousness, usually they are a rectangle of fabric, gathered on top. Simplicity of cut is compensated by elegant colorful or checkered colors. Nevertheless, each interior solution has its own peculiarities in choosing textiles for windows.
Country
A fairly dynamic style of the American outback. It is characterized by bright checkered rectangular panels with hooks, forming a small assembly on the cornice.
A cage or a small floral ornament is suitable for plain walls, if the walls are pasted with wallpaper with a pattern, you need to choose a fabric in tone with the main color of the walls. Preference should be given to natural shades: beige, walnut, light coffee.
Lambrequins of simple cut also gather on a cornice in a shallow fold. Country style lambrequins are characterized by vertical grabbing from contrasting plain fabric. Try to use thin denim and soft skin to decorate the curtains - and you will end up in the trend for a long time.
Provence
The calmness and bliss of the sun-warmed southern France is emphasized by light cloth panels that let in a lot of sun. Choose the simplest cut, focusing all your attention on color. This style is characterized by dull, as if sun-tinted shades - cornflower blue, olive, pistachio, lavender, mustard. Appropriate blue-white and not too small cell.
Use it for sewing curtains in the style of "cafe". In the textile design, a floral ornament resembling bouquets of wildflowers is popular. There are no sharp saturated colors. Instead of small assembly on the ledge, use soft, wide hinges of the same material to fasten the curtains. Let the curtains hang down to the floor and sway slightly from the breeze - and you will catch the atmosphere of a leisurely French province.
Scandinavian
Unlike the south of France, this style is based on pure cold shades, reminiscent of snow-capped peaks and mountain rivers. Snow-white curtains suitable for him, even with wide folds, go down to the floor. You can use more practical pastel shades: beige, blue, lilac. Preference should be given to natural fabrics: linen, cotton, fine wool.
Mediterranean
Lightness, simplicity and conciseness - this is the motto of this style. Window curtains should be the same - a minimum of textile details on large windows.
If you like warm shades, choose Italian, otherwise Greek and its signature colors are more suitable for you: white, blue and golden. Snow-white roller blinds on the windows or golden Roman will remind you of ship sails and protect from the scorching sun.
Rustic
Under such a straightforward name, the style of the Russian village, well known to each of us, has taken root. Due to the huge size of Russia, our folk style is not so strictly defined in comparison with other countries. Each region has its own interior features. Nevertheless, the general principles developed over the centuries remain. When planning to arrange windows in a country house, consider several recommendations:
- color curtains should be in harmony with the general color palette of the house;
- preferably light natural materials - cotton (chintz), linen;
- Choose fabrics with a simple, uncomplicated pattern - a cage, strip, floral ornament or plain.
A special feature of the rustic style is the patchwork fabric imitating patchwork. Curtain design is also not difficult. Usually they look like rectangles assembled on a string of wooden cornice.
Long curtains visually make the ceilings higher, short curtains are more suitable for the kitchen. Curtains in the bedroom should completely cover the window from the light.
The same simple cut lambrequins and grabs from a strip of fabric are appropriate. To sew curtains for a summer residence with your own hands is possible for any housewife who knows how to scribble a little on a sewing machine.
How to sew do-it-yourself curtains for a summer residence
Before you go to the store for a cloth, you need to measure the windows, take into account the allowances for seams and drapery, and specify the length of the finished product and the number of windows. You will need more material if you sew a tablecloth, sofa cushions or curtains onto open kitchen shelves in a set of curtains made from the same fabric. You also need to consider that before starting the cutting, the fabric needs to be washed so that it shrinks and ironed, so the flow rate can increase slightly.
When buying fabric, check with the seller at what temperature it can be washed and ironed.
For sewing, you need to prepare scissors, a tailor's centimeter tape and chalk, threads to match the fabric, pins and a sewing machine. In the process, you will need an iron.
The length of the finished curtain is measured from the top of the cornice string and down to the selected mark - window sill or lower, to the floor. Add about 10 cm to the resulting figure - for the drawstring under the eaves string and on the hem of the lower seam. The width of the panel should be greater than the width of the cornice by about 20-30 cm.If drapery is expected, the resulting figure is multiplied by 1.5-2.5.
Spread the washed and ironed fabric on a flat surface and measure the required dimensions with chalk. And do not forget the main tailor's rule: measure seven times - cut once! Otherwise, one trip to the store will not be enough.
When cutting fabric into a cage or a transverse strip, it is necessary to observe the pattern repeat so that it matches the height on both fabric panels.
After cutting, sweep the seams and try on the product to the window. Also check how easily the cornice string is threaded into the upper drawstring. If you were not mistaken with the sizes, it is possible to flash a curtain on the typewriter. The edges of the product are sewn with a hem seam. To facilitate the work will help a special foot for the sewing machine. Do not forget to fix the seams so that they do not open when washing. After sewing all the seams, the finished curtains need to be ironed with steam iron.
Country curtains for the kitchen
You got great curtains for the room! Now you can sew curtains to the cottage for the kitchen. When choosing material and tailoring, consider several important things:
- kitchen curtains will have to be washed more often, so the fabric should be durable and easy to wash;
- waving curtains can cause a fire if there is a stove nearby, consider this when choosing a style and length;
- curtains for the kitchen most often sew short in the style of "cafe".
The color for the kitchen curtains can be chosen brighter and more elegant than for the room.
With a modern wide selection of materials, finding a suitable and beautiful option for curtains in a country house is not difficult. Try to sew them yourself and the result will certainly delight you, because a thing made by your own hands fills the interior with warmth and comfort for many years.
