Swing gates are still in demand for decorating gates or for fencing summer cottages with fences, but are slowly becoming yesterday for the arrangement of garages, because the need to have an empty space for the movement of the doors becomes an unjustified luxury. Modern garage roller shutters do not occupy any space at all.

These models got their name from the combination of two words: English roll (roll) and Russian shutters. The design is a continuous canvas (in contrast to the blinds), which is wound into a roll, placed in a special case. Elements of the system are: a collar drive, a web of slats, guides, locking devices (key / lock, handle, control panel).

For the manufacture of slats, two types of metal are used: aluminum and steel.

For the box at the top of the opening, a place with a height of 30-40 cm is required (the dimensions of the case depend on the length of the blade). To install the guides on the sides of the opening, it is necessary to provide strips with a width of about 10 cm.

Installation of roller shutters is carried out in the following ways:

• waybill - the most common.They are used for installation on garages, long built and not involving any reconstruction. In this case, the box is mounted on the wall above the opening outside or inside;
• built-in - the box is installed in the opening, and the structure does not stand out on the facade of the building.

How to install do-it-yourself roller shutters

Before installation, check the geometry of the opening. To do this, measure the diagonals - a maximum difference of 5 mm is permissible. It is also important to verify the verticality of the side slopes and a clear horizontal arrangement of the upper (deviations of more than 5 mm are considered significant). Slopes must be even, without chips.

For installation work, you will need tools: a drill / puncher with a set of drills, a tape measure, a building level, a screwdriver, a hammer.

Installation steps

1. Both guides are laid on a horizontal surface and holes for mounting are drilled into them. Both parts must be drilled at once in order to maintain symmetry. Moreover, 15 cm should be retreated from the lower and upper edges. Four holes will be sufficient for each guide. First, holes are made for the size of self-tapping screws in both walls of the guide, and then only in the front, a hole is drilled for a decorative cap / plug.
2. Both guides are attached to the box and the entire structure is attached to the doorway. With the help of the building level, the vertical position of the guides and the horizontal one of the box are checked.
3. Through previously drilled in the guide holes, the structure is screwed to the wall with screws. In the same way, the box body is fixed on the left and right sides. A hole is drilled at the end of the housing for outputting the cable from the remote control to the outside.
4. The rings for winding the roll sheet are evenly distributed over the shaft, the sheet is carefully started through the shaft into the guides (you need to start from the bottom strip). Traction springs are put on the upper edge of the web and are evenly distributed over the web. The edges of all springs are fixed in special holes / perforations on the shaft.
5. Guided by the instructions for connecting the remote control unit, we connect the electric drive to the unit.
6. When the motor is on, the end positions of the blade are adjusted. The lower position is determined by touching the roller blind with the floor, and in the upper position, it is desirable to leave one and a half strips of the canvas.

For installation, garage doors with manual or automatic control are offered. When choosing a system, it should be borne in mind that manual structures are inexpensive, but it is more difficult to deal with, and automatic garage doors are easier to operate (especially with a remote device), but they cost more.

With manual control, the following mechanisms are used: tape, cord, spring-inertial. The undoubted advantage of manual systems is the independence of work from electricity. The most popular is the spring-inertial version of the device: to lower the canvas, it is enough to pull the roller shutters down by the hand with an effort.

Recommendations for choosing roller shutters

Many gate models require different technical characteristics, so when buying a product, the following points should be taken into account:

• There are three types of boxes: round and semicircular are mounted on the wall above the opening, and rectangular - inside the opening. Moreover, the cost of the latter is slightly less;
• the foam-filled profile does not allow to keep heat well enough in the garage, but it possesses some heat-insulating properties;
• the wider the garage doorway, the lower the resistance of the canvas to wind loads;
• locking systems are: a lock on the lower bracket (the cheapest and easiest option), an upper deadlock (installed inside the box), manual side bolts, an automatic lock switch.
