Carport: advantages, materials, manufacturing secrets (22 photos)

A carport is needed in order to perform the functions of a garage in places of temporary parking, where the simplicity and speed of construction is more than any other quality. In dachas, in the yards of private or multi-storey buildings, a carport will be the best possible solution, including due to a long list of benefits.

Why exactly the canopy?

Like any construction that you can build with your own hands, carports have their advantages.

Protection

This is the main advantage, and the main purpose - even the simplest canopy will protect the car from:

  • adverse weather conditions - rain, which can cause rust, hail, which can crush metal or damage glass, the scorching sun, which can burn the color of the body and seats to almost white;
  • seasonal troubles - leaves in the fall, snow in the winter, wind in the summer;
  • animals - no pigeons will get to the car, standing under a canopy.

Lack of own microclimate

The main disadvantage of garages is the difference in temperature and pressure at the exit, which can affect the condition of the car. With canopies there is no such problem, regardless of whether it is an extension or an independent structure.

Simplicity

You can erect even a metal canopy under the car in no more than a week, while work on the construction of the garage will take much more time.

Aesthetics

A beautiful canopy can become a real decoration of the site, complement the design plan and complete it. For example, forged carports can look like real works of art.

Cheapness

To build a garage in the yard is not only difficult, but also expensive, while a canopy - even if it is a canopy for 2 cars or 3 cars - will cost much less.

Ease of parking

You need to call into the garage, constantly fearing not to fit into the door and spending time trying to turn around in the yard. Calling under a street canopy is much easier.

With the right approach, the canopy outperforms a large, enclosed garage, especially if you don't leave your car under it for the winter.

Materials

The carport with a gable roof (with a gable roof, however, too) consists of three main parts.

The foundation

The entire canopy is installed on it and the pillars of the frame are built into it. May be:

  • Eco-friendly. In this case, a plastic mesh is used, which is mounted in the ground and grassed for lawns. In the summer, the site will look attractive: juicy and green. The net supports the weight of the machine, is insensitive to low temperatures, and cannot burn or decay.
  • Crushed stone. The cheapest option that is often included in carport designs. If you buy river pebbles, it can look very aesthetically pleasing. It withstands weight, is absolutely insensitive to anything, passes water well, but it can clog up with garbage, therefore it needs to be cleaned.
  • Paving slabs. It requires a lot of attention - not all tiles are able to support the weight of the car, and even more so two or three. Also requires a lot of laying effort - first you have to lay out a pillow and level the soil.But it looks very aesthetically pleasing and passes water well.
  • Concrete. The most unattractive in appearance, but the cheapest option. Suitable only for places with even ground, which is not inclined to change position. It requires pouring efforts - until it dries, it will have to be protected from everything that can leave traces.

Frame

The wire mesh consists of pillars and rafters. It supports the roof.

  • Wooden. A carport with such a frame can look aesthetically pleasing (especially if there is a craftsman engaging in woodcarving), it is easy to make, and does not cost too much if you do not try to make it from solid oak. However, a canopy made of wood for the car has its drawbacks: it needs careful maintenance, since the raw wood burns easily, decays and is subject to a wide variety of biological hazards, from mold to parasites. To prevent this, you need to look for special varnishes and coatings, and repeat the treatment once every couple of years.
  • Metal. A carport made of metal looks no less aesthetically pleasing than a wooden one made of logs (especially if it is forged), and has much greater reliability. Properly treated from rust, it will last much longer than wooden canopies. However, it is difficult to do it yourself - you need specific skills and a welding machine.
  • Of stone. A much more exotic option than, for example, a carport made of timber. The posts are made of brick and the result is reliable and aesthetically pleasing. Requires the ability to lay bricks and mix cement mortars. It can be combined with other options.

Roof

Covers the frame. There are many options for it:

  • Awning. The simplest and cheapest of possible solutions, often tent covering is used as a temporary one. However, with a reliable frame, an awning can be an excellent refuge for a car in the country. It is waterproof, does not rustle too loudly, does not miss hail and does not collapse under the weight of snow. The only minus of the tent is that it wears out quickly, which is why replacement is often required.
  • Metal tile. It is much more reliable than an awning, at the same time it is light, reliable and looks like a real tile. Does not need careful transportation, does not require special skills. The only real minus of metal roofs - it is completely irrelevant when it comes to living space - it conveys any sound very well.
  • Decking. It is also more reliable than an awning, but at the same time the canopy from it will be less aesthetic than the canopy from metal - in fact, the material is a metal sheet, whimsically curved for greater strength. Reliable, easy, easy to use, more economical than metal (after it almost no waste) and transmits sound just as well.
  • Ondulin. They are made from cellulose and canopies from it are considered more environmentally friendly than canopies from metal tiles or from a metal profile. It is good to make a gable roof out of it, since it easily bends without breaking. It is lightweight, reliable, does not require special skills, is resistant to moisture, but it is combustible and quickly fades.
  • Slate. A canopy from it will be cheaper than a canopy from a metal profile, just as light and easy to install, but at the same time, the slate is more fragile, contains asbestos, which is dangerous for humans, and is sensitive to moisture.
  • Metal profile. A canopy from a metal profile will be smart and cheap, but it will have to be processed so that it does not rust. In addition, like any metal materials, it conducts sound well.
  • Polycarbonate Awnings made of polycarbonate for cars from it are even more elegant than from a metal profile due to the huge variety of colors and the ability to partially let in sunlight. In addition, the carport made of polycarbonate is immune to water, fire, or biological irritants, it easily bends and is simply mounted. The only negative is thermal expansion.The carports made of polycarbonate tend to expand in hot weather, which is why during installation you need to take care of special screws and wide holes for them, otherwise the roof will quickly crack.

It depends on the materials how the canopy will look on the site, how long it will stand and how safe the car will be under it. When designing a house with a carport, you need to think about the materials almost first of all.

Important nuances in DIY manufacturing

When wondering how to make a carport or how to build a carport, several important things to consider at once.

The general design, and you need to decide on it before you start making a carport for the car in the country with your own hands. The canopy can be different:

  • attached to the wall on one side and open on the other three or completely open - its reliability, aesthetics, and the need to make sound insulation depend on this;
  • can be one-story or two-story - on the second floor you can arrange a gazebo or store the necessary little things, without which not a single summer cottage can do.

Polycarbonate Carport

Semicircular carport

Roof construction can be:

  • a single-pitched or gable canopy - and not only the aesthetic side of the issue depends on this, but also how well moisture will drain from the roof;
  • canopy with or without a visor - under the visor you can place the necessary things, one way or another related to the car.

Carport in the garden

Carport with a pitched roof

General location. The carport should be located:

  • under a very slight slope - sufficient to allow water to drain, but too small for a car to be parked in the yard;
  • in the shade - not necessarily complete, but sufficient so that the roof material does not burn out (especially true for plastic roofs and slate).

Carport with glass roof

Awning for the car

Sizes. It depends on them how expensive it will be to build a carport with your own hands and how convenient it will be to drive under it:

  • the height should be a meter higher than the car with the upper trunk - if you make it more, precipitation will fall inside, if less - the car will not be able to fit normally;
  • the length should be a meter longer than the length of the car itself;
  • the width should be two meters more.

As a result, a house with a carport will be made to all standards, and it will not be clear from it that the owner had to figure out for a long time how to make a carport with his own hands. Attention to detail, accuracy and compliance with the rules will make this possible.
