Shutters in home decor: types and manufacturing (35 photos)

The most vulnerable place in the house is the windows: through them dust enters the rooms, wind penetrates, noise from the street, and thieves also make their way. But since there are no windows in the house, shutters were invented that protect it from natural inconveniences, prying eyes and uninvited guests. There was a time when every window was equipped with shutters, and now they are back in fashion and decorate private houses and country houses.

Varieties of shutters

The design of the shutters has not changed much over the centuries of history, so they are often used not only for protection purposes, but also to create an antique facade. Using decorative overlays, carved platbands, figured openings, you can decorate the facade of the house and distinguish it from the general row. There are several types of shutters with small design differences.

Types of shutters:

  • Classic shutters. They have two symmetrical flaps located on both sides of the window opening. This is the most common type of design, used on windows of standard sizes;
  • Single leaf shutters. They are installed on narrow windows when it is impractical to hang two wings. It can be mounted on either side of the window, the main thing is that it is convenient to open them;
  • Folding shutters. Sashes consist of two or more lamellas, opening according to the accordion principle. They can be installed both on one and on both sides of the window;
  • Shutters-blinds. Using the rotary mechanism, the horizontal bars are rotated, so that the amount of light entering the room can be adjusted.

In addition to differences in design, the shutters differ in manufacturing material. The most common wooden shutters are installed in wooden houses: timber, frame, log. Also, wooden shutters can be installed on the windows of brick houses.

Metal shutters are less aesthetic, but more reliable. If the attractiveness of the exterior of the house is important for the owners, and at the same time you need to create reliable protection against hacking, art forging is used in the decor of metal products.

Plastic shutters, on the contrary, do not stand out with great strength, but they are more attractive in terms of design and cost.

They are made with imitation of various wood textures and are popular in private houses surrounded by a fence, where the owners live permanently.

Interior shutters

In addition to outdoor, there are internal options for shutters. Since they are installed on the window from the inside of the room, their design must match the interior of the room. Compared to street models, internal window shutters have a significant advantage: you do not need to open the window or go outside to open them. It is especially convenient in the winter or in the fall in rainy weather.

Since strength is not the main advantage of decorative shutters, their shutters can be made of thick paper or fabric: the window is closed from prying eyes, and at the same time a certain amount of light enters the room. But the most popular are internal shutters-blinds with rotating horizontal slats. They can be constantly kept in a closed position by regulating the flow of light coming from outside.

If the protective abilities of the internal shutters do not seem reliable enough, grilles can be added to the window.

You can make internal shutters yourself from wood or buy ready-made plastic models. So that in the open position the shutters do not occupy the space in the room, it is better to choose sliding shutters, which are almost invisible behind the curtains.

DIY wooden shutters

Making the window shutters at the dacha is the easiest way out of wood - this is an affordable material, and if no big claims are made to the appearance of the structure, they can be made from used boards, and then simply painted.

You will need such tools:

  • band and milling saw;
  • level;
  • plane;
  • drill;
  • roulette.

From materials other than boards, bars of 130X60 mm are needed, window canopies or hinges, screws, nails. It is better to use boards with a groove-tongue system that fit snugly against one another without leaving gaps.

How to make wings for swing shutters:

  1. The window opening is measured and the sash drawing is carried out. The height and width should be equal to the height and width of the window opening along the outer borders of the slopes.
  2. Since wooden shutters will consist of two wings, the resulting width is divided by 2.
  3. Shields for sashes are assembled in size: the boards are cut in length and adjusted in width.
  4. Having departed from the upper and lower edges of 20 cm, horizontal dovetail grooves are selected in the shields with the help of a band saw, and then they are expanded with a manual milling saw to 10 cm.
  5. The beam for the cross member (3-4 cm wider than the cut groove) is attached end to the milling recess, and marks are made on it in the shape of the groove.
  6. On a milling machine, longitudinal dovetail grooves are cut in the cross members.
  7. The bars are installed in the spike-groove system.
  8. The crossbars are screwed to the boards of the shield with screws.

But how to make window shutters if there are no necessary power tools? The crossbars are simply screwed to the assembled shields from the wrong side, but in this case the design will be less reliable.

Then, on the front side of the cusps, loops are attached, which are located exactly above the horizontal crossbars. Both wings are laid on a horizontal surface as they will be located in the window opening, tightly pressed against one another and temporarily connected by bars.

The resulting shield is tried on to the window and the hinge points are marked on the wall.

Now, holes for the hinges are drilled on the wall, and the sashes connected together are mounted in the window opening. By removing the temporary bars, you can check the wooden shutters in action.

DIY metal shutters

Shutters

If the cottage or house is used as temporary housing, and the main goal is to protect it from unwanted entry, you can make metal shutters on the windows. For their manufacture, steel or iron sheets are used.

Shutters

First, the frame of a steel strip or corner is welded to the size of the window, after which a sheet of the corresponding dimensions is cut by welding. If the window is large, the inside is reinforced with additional stiffeners, which can be located in horizontal and vertical position. The hinges are attached first to the sashes, after which they are tried on the window opening and the places of their fastening are marked on the wall. Anchors are driven into the slopes and shutters are mounted on them.

Shutters

Even before fastening to windows, iron shutters are treated with anticorrosive and coated with a primer. You can paint the metal after installation in a window opening with hinges.

Shutters

Unlike wood, metal doors can overlap one another. Having placed both wings on a flat surface, in the middle part from below and above, backing 20 cm from the edge, holes are drilled (in both sheets at once). Two bolts are welded onto a metal strip equal to the height of the shutter so that the distance between them is equal to the distance between the holes.The bar will serve as a lock: by inserting bolts into the holes, nuts and washers are screwed onto them from the side of the room, and thus the wings are firmly held in the closed position.
