Here is a boring wardrobe at home. And it's been a long time. It is sad for you that he is no longer as beautiful as he was before, and for the cabinet for the same reason. So you need to make your own cabinet decor! You just need to decide on the idea, and the process will drag out instantly.
Choose an option
Of course, it is important that the future closet is decorated in the general style of the room. It may well become a bright accent, but still should not get out of the general impression of the room. If the whole room is decorated in retro style, then do not do the decor of the old cabinet in hi-tech colors.
The most harmonious thing will be to focus on the selection of room tones or in combination with it, to repeat the drawing or element somewhere on the surface of the cabinet. You can do the opposite: add some elements around the room from the decorated furniture element. In any case, the closet and the whole room must somehow intersect and combine.
How and with what can I transform a cabinet?
- Paints. The easiest option. But he is not at all boring! A repainted cabinet can look incredibly interesting.
- Wallpaper cabinet decor. A very affordable way to radically transform any element of furniture. Moreover, then the room and furniture will really be in the same style.
- Use self-adhesive films. Furniture has been decorated with such films for a long time, so unusual and beautiful options appear more and more often. It will be possible to pick up something for the interior of the whole room.
- Decoupage. This option has conquered many, because it really does amazing things with furniture! With decoupage, any cabinet will become a separate work of design.
- Volumetric plaster. Modeling elements can surprisingly transform even the most boring cabinet. And if you emphasize them with gilding or any other paint, then the furniture will instantly be ennobled and will shine in a new color.
No one forbids combining different types of decoration with each other. Plaster and decoupage are often used together; wallpapers and painting elements look quite harmonious. Only self-adhesive film is usually used as a standalone decor.
With a brush in hand
The decor of the cabinet with paints is one of the most simple. Even a cabinet simply painted in one color already looks completely different. It is best to use a water-based paint or acrylic. A water-based emulsion is more profitable for use on large surfaces, for example, for the facade of a cabinet, but with acrylic it is more convenient to do “jewelry” work.
A brush and a drop of inspiration do incredible things with furniture.
The cabinet doors can be distinguished by a stroke of a different color - and the entire facade will instantly seem voluminous. Strips of different thicknesses or jolly peas look amazing. To do this, absolutely no artistic skills are needed. It is enough to mark the cabinet well so that the picture is uniform throughout the furniture.
If you have the skills of an artist, then your closet is incredibly lucky! Imagine that furniture is a canvas, and start creating! Floral and floral motifs, fabulous and fantastic paintings, whole landscapes or paintings will look interesting. It is best to first sketch on paper to see exactly how the cabinet should look, and then transfer all ideas to furniture. Acrylic will definitely be needed for a detailed drawing.
Water-based and acrylic paints are practically odorless. So you can paint furniture at home. However, place film or paper under the cabinet to prevent the floor from getting dirty. It is not necessary to cover the finished decor with any varnishes. Both paints are very resistant.
What if there are a lot of ideas for painting the cabinet, but the inner artist has run away somewhere? Then we will decorate any lockers under the stencil. Such a useful thing can be found in all kinds of art stores or done independently. To create a stencil yourself, you will need the selected drawing, a dense but transparent plastic folder, something writing and scissors.
We print the picture of the right size. If it is very large, then divide it into several sheets. Then put the paper under the folder, draw this pattern on the plastic and cut it out. Everything, you have a stencil. Now you can make the decor of cabinet doors with the most intricate patterns.
Get the remains of the wallpaper
Another fairly simple option for decorating the cabinet. Especially since furniture can be made either as inconspicuous as possible or an accent can be created on it. And everyone has the remnants of wallpaper, so you don’t even need to buy anything.
Combinations from different wallpapers look gorgeous. The ideas for decorating cabinets with this material are almost endless. The walls can be pasted over with some wallpaper, and the doors with others. Can be combined with paint to create a basic uniform color.
The decor of the wardrobe gives even more opportunities. On the facade you can stick bright photo wallpapers with a gorgeous landscape, a view of the city or even a piece of space. Nothing compares to such cabinet panels.
Transformation by film
The advantage of the film is that it is easy to stick on and it is easy to clean. This is one of the few materials that rests on old Soviet lacquered cabinets. Their varnish coating is very difficult to remove, which greatly limits the options for decoration.
It is not necessary to cover the entire cabinet with some kind of plain film. You can always find options with an unusual pattern or finished carved patterns. Again, there is always the opportunity to independently cut a pattern or silhouette. Another such self-adhesive film can quickly transform any mirror or glass, and if the result is tired, then it is quite possible to peel it off.
Magic decoupage
The most incredible transformation of an old cabinet with your own hands is decoupage. This method can do anything. The cabinet can be rejuvenated or artificially aged, add gilding, vintage drawings and even photographs to it.
But this process is very complex and lengthy. And the availability is not different. Finding the right decoupage napkins is easy and cheap, but all basic and finishing materials are not cheap. If you have definitely decided that decoupage is exactly what you need, practice first at smaller facilities and squares, and then move on to furniture.
Unusual use of plaster
Plaster allows you to make any surface texture. It can only be some kind of corner elements such as a contour ornament or the entire surface will have a relief pattern. For such work you will need all sorts of stamps and stencils.
The finished texture can also be saturated with color. Here again, you will need paint. To paint or cover in one tone is a matter of fantasy. Amazingly combines texture and decoupage. Then the surface will really seem voluminous and somehow impossible.
Always give your furniture a new life. Believe me, you can never find more unusual and original furniture than do-it-yourselfers. Get inspired and start creating!
