Things cannot be insured against dilapidation. Even the strongest and most reliable doors after a certain period of time need repair, restoration. Of course, many factors determine the duration of trouble-free operation of doors: the base material, the quality and thickness of the protective layer, and the installation location.
Do-it-yourself door restoration is carried out in different techniques and includes mainly several stages. It is clear that small damage (scratches, chips of the protective layer) is quite easily repaired. Especially since no special knowledge or devices are required for cosmetic updating of products.
How to improve the entrance doors?
There are no trifles when choosing external doors, since they simultaneously perform both decorative and protective functions. Naturally, a strong structure and anti-burglary qualities are the main characteristics of structures. But one must not underestimate the appearance, since the front door is the visiting card of an apartment, a house. Scratched, rusted canvases produce a repulsive impression. But minor damage is easy to remove.
Doors with metal base
These designs are deservedly considered the highest quality. Regular surface care and restoration of metal doors will significantly extend the service life.
Corrosion elimination on a metal sheet is carried out in several stages with a solvent, iron brush, paint, primer, roller. First, rust and cracked paint are removed with a brush. The repaired area is sanded and then treated with a solvent. If necessary, putty, primer. After the primer has completely dried, paint is applied.
The use of MDF panels for sheathing an iron door is very rational. After all, it is an environmentally friendly, water-repellent, durable material. Advantages of this decor option: a wide selection of shades, excellent protective properties, special working skills and equipment are not required. The disadvantage is the need to order a special MDF blank if you want to install a textured coating.
Stages of work: measuring the door parameters, ordering the MDF blade, treating the metal surface with anticorrosive compounds, drilling holes on the MDF blade (for furniture), installing the panel on the door and fixing it using self-tapping screws. Installation of door hardware.
Wooden doors
Entrance doors are made of oak and pine canvases and are no longer found frequently. Owners are in no hurry to change the tree, because the material has excellent sound and heat insulating parameters, aesthetic appearance. A long period of operation depends on careful handling and timely repair of the canvas.
Do-it-yourself restoration of wooden doors comes down to replacing the upholstery and warming the canvas. Faux leather and leather are used mainly for decoration. As a heater, a special lining fabric, synthetic winterizer, isolon is used. Work steps:
- the cloth is removed from the hinges and laid on a flat surface;
- old upholstery is removed;
- layout, fixing the insulation on the canvas;
- covering the door with finishing material and fixing it (with a decorative carnation you can fill a non-standard pattern / pattern).
- It is important to avoid distortion of the tissue in the final stages.

Options for updating and repairing interior doors
It is quite natural that over time small defects appear on the surface: scratches, stains. If the main canvas is well preserved, then there is no point in changing the door. Since apartments usually have the same doors, a cardinal upgrade is a very expensive pleasure. Restoring products is much simpler / more economical. Recovery is local (eliminating scratches / cracks, chips of paint / varnish) and global (changing the shade of the canvas, applying decor / pattern).
Standard stages of work: priming, grinding, filling, painting or applying varnish. What to use and in what ways to repair in each case, are determined by the base / coating materials, the desired result.
Restoration of doors from the array begins with the removal of the old coating. Cracked varnish can be removed using a special mixture, grinder or sandpaper. If there is carved decor on the canvas, then it is more rational to use a solvent. Then the surface is cleaned with fine sandpaper, that is, roughnesses are removed.
The next stage is the application of mastic on chips, cracks. At this stage of repair, you can also change the shade of the canvas with a stain.
For applying varnish, a wooden door is laid on a horizontal surface to avoid sagging. A beautiful durable surface provides several layers of varnish. The composition must be at room temperature. Layers of decor alternate (horizontal / vertical) and are applied to dried surfaces.
Restoring veneered doors comes down to fixing various scratches. Door production technology: the natural massif is veneered (a thin section of natural wood of different species).
To remove light scratches that have not touched the veneer, use a retouching polish. The composition is carefully applied to the damaged area and rubbed into the damage using soft tissues. Scratches no deeper than 2 mm are removed with a wax pencil selected according to the shade of the veneer. A heated agent, slowly, fill the damage. Dry and excess (protruding above the surface of the canvas) wax is cut off. The whole place is covered with repair varnish.
Doors made of eco-veneer (artificial material) are also offered on construction markets. A distinctive feature of the products is that the surface is practically impossible to scratch. But with serious blows, the canvas can break and is no longer subject to “resuscitation”.
The restoration of the laminated door is carried out in the same ways as veneered. The cost of laminated products is much lower than veneered ones, since in the manufacture of a wooden frame glued with MDF panels with a laminated coating that imitates different types of wood.
The application of several layers of varnish after sealing scratches provides additional protection. Global damage to the surface (swelling of the laminate, break in the surface) is almost impossible to fix - it is more advisable to buy a new door.
Doors made of fiberboard, depending on the quality of the decorative coating, can be restored in several ways. An interesting option is to give the surface the appearance of a wooden structure. For this, a special layer of veneer is used. Do-it-yourself restoration of old doors consists in pasting the canvas with decor using an iron. It is important to monitor the temperature (up to 50 ° C), since overheating will lead to damage to the veneer. The final stage is the application of furniture varnish.
Restoration of old painted wooden doors is carried out using a building hair dryer.Under the influence of a jet of hot air, the coating bubbles / peels off and is carefully removed with a spatula. The remaining paint is removed by grinding.
Filling on wood is used to eliminate surface defects (cracks, scratches) and its alignment.
The final stage is painting the doors. It is possible to cover the canvas only with matte enamel or additionally tint with paint of the chosen color.
Do-it-yourself restoration of interior doors is a useful activity, as it allows you to save money, makes it possible to learn new technologies. This is a budget option for creating new harmonious interiors in which doors play an important role.
Sometimes repair work is not related to the restoration of the canvas and comes down to tightening the hinges, fixing the shattered fasteners. This occurs in the case of skewing of the canvas due to the large weight, wear of the loops. If the components are finally out of order, then their replacement is most appropriate (if they are not welded).
Before carrying out repairs, it is advisable to consult with professionals to choose the right restoration method and use the appropriate tools.
