The times when stucco decorated only the ceilings in very expensive homes are long gone. Today it can be seen in office rooms and ordinary apartments. This is due to the fact that cheaper materials have appeared that make it possible to make the decor of the ceiling stucco even for people with low incomes.
A few centuries ago, the ceilings were decorated with stucco made of stone or expensive mortar. Today you can complete the decoration of the ceiling with stucco molding from:
- gypsum;
- polystyrene;
- polyurethane.
Before buying a particular type of stucco molding, you need to familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Look not only at the appearance of stucco molding - analyze its properties. Learn, for example, how a particular material behaves at low temperatures. Suddenly your heating system will break down and the rooms will not be heated for several days. Any force majeure circumstances must be considered.
Polyurethane stucco molding
The polyurethane stucco molding is very beautiful, because it looks like a real stone. It is light and yet durable. If you buy such stucco molding, you do not need to paint it - it already looks very presentable.
At the same time, the paint lays well on the polyurethane, with an ideally even layer. It is very convenient to work with stucco molding from polyurethane. This material does not crumble and does not break, and cracks do not come from small impacts on it. If you want to make a really beautiful ceiling in the apartment, highlight some of its elements with gold or copper paint. Then the interior will look even richer.
A great advantage of this material is its high resistance to temperature extremes. He is not afraid of high humidity and severe frost, therefore, the facade of the building can be decorated with decorative elements from polyurethane. Just imagine how much it would cost to decorate the outside of the house with expensive stone moldings.
Stucco molding from polyurethane is not afraid of temperature increase. The material melts at +300 degrees, so these decorative elements can be mounted under a chandelier and lamps - they will not burn and melt even after prolonged use. Decorative elements made of polyurethane do not change color even with prolonged exposure to the best solar and are not afraid of moisture, so they can be washed.
Stucco molding
In the interior of both the house and the apartment, gypsum stucco on the ceiling also looks good. This material has many shortcomings, but there are significant advantages. Gypsum is natural, which means absolutely safe material. It does not emit any harmful substances, has no smell, is absolutely hypoallergenic. Gypsum does not burn and does not melt, therefore, decorative elements made from it can be placed under the chandelier for many bulbs. Gypsum also has such an important property as hygroscopicity. If the room is too wet, it picks up excess moisture, and when the air is too dry - it gives off.
Gypsum stucco on the ceiling looks really rich and fits into any interior. She is decorated with ceilings in rooms in the style of Provence, Art Nouveau, Baroque. Gypsum is a very plastic material, absolutely any sculptures can be created from it, including ceiling moldings.If you did not find anything suitable in the stores, you can make an individual order for the production of the stucco molding that fits perfectly into the interior. It is expensive, but very original.
Gypsum is a very fragile material. If during operation you drop some element, then cracks will go along it or it will fly to smithereens. Hygroscopicity is also a serious drawback.
With high humidity, the gypsum does not dry out and may begin to crumble over time, so the ceiling is not made with stucco moldings in the bathroom, the room with the pool, the bathhouse, on the street. If you still want to decorate the interior with gypsum stucco, it must be treated with a special solution. Gypsum is a very expensive material, and the design of ceilings with stucco made of gypsum can be very expensive - not everyone can afford such a royal decor.
Foam polystyrene stucco
To design modern interiors, polystyrene or polystyrene is actively used. It is quite flexible, very light and several times cheaper than gypsum and polyurethane. Polystyrene stucco molding is not afraid of temperature extremes and high humidity. It is very easy to work with it: it is quickly mounted, due to its light weight and special material structure. This material lasts a very long time. With proper use, the design of the ceilings with stucco molding from foam will delight you for many years.
With a huge number of advantages, polystyrene is flammable. This stucco molding is afraid of fire, so it is not placed near the lamps and under the chandelier on the ceiling. It also costs much less than gypsum or polyurethane, but it doesn’t look so presentable either. It can be seen close up that the stucco molding is not made of expensive material, but of ordinary polystyrene. To improve the look, it can be painted with the color of the ceiling or walls. Then the interior will become even more beautiful and interesting, and the ceiling will look like the ceilings in palaces and rich estates.
How to fix stucco molding?
It is not enough to choose an expensive stucco molding, you also need not make a mistake with the purchase of the composition on which it will be attached to the ceiling. There is no need to save. It is best to buy stucco molding and adhesives from one manufacturer. If you didn’t find it, ask the sellers to advise you and choose the right option.
For fastening stucco moldings made of polystyrene and polyurethane use "liquid nails", putty or other modern adhesive solutions. Before attaching it, you need to align, clean and dry the walls. It is attached only to perfectly smooth and absolutely clean surfaces.
For gypsum stucco, you need a solution that can support the weight of very heavy elements. Obviously, gypsum weighs much more than polystyrene foam, so "liquid nails" for its fastening will not work. Before fixing gypsum stucco, the surface is treated with a solution of PVA glue and gypsum. Sometimes it is mounted on dowels, but this work needs to be done at least by two or three.
Today, stretch ceilings with stucco molding are quite popular. They are not so expensive, but they significantly transform the interior. Only gypsum cannot be fixed on ceilings - light finishing materials, preferably polystyrene, must be used.
To visually raise the ceiling and draw a border between them by the walls, you can attach a narrow cornice (ceiling plinth) made of foam. The stretch fabric is very soft, so the decorative elements need not be fixed to it, but to the wall. The work is jewelry, but if it is done carefully, the ceiling will look different.
And the stretch ceiling can be decorated with lightweight foam sockets. To make it look good and hold, the outlet should not occupy more than a quarter of the ceiling and exceed 80 cm in diameter.
If you want the interior of your apartment to become more aristocratic, use stucco molding to decorate the ceiling. Even small elements can decorate a room and make the interior more interesting.With the help of stucco, you can also hide defects in the ceiling, mask cracks and bumps. Do not be afraid to experiment and decorate your house, then you will be really pleased to be in it.
