What is laminate flooring made of?

Traditional European technology provides for the structure of a laminate panel (lamella) of four layers:

  • Upper - melamine resin, to which some manufacturers add improvers. The layer determines the degree of wear resistance and, accordingly, the class of a particular brand of coating.
  • Decorative - paper specially treated with a pattern of ash wood. The drawing is done with special UV resistant paints. Clarity is maintained during many years of intensive use of the coating.
  • The main one is a super dense HDF plate. Accumulates the basic technical properties, including moisture resistance.
  • The lower one is stabilization. Ash laminate protects from moisture penetration from below, balancing the condition of the panels during operation. Without such load balancing, the coating would not last long.

All layers are densely compacted, forming an aesthetic, high-strength, dense structure.

To these four compulsory layers, some manufacturers also add heat or sound insulation. They more than compensate for a slightly larger than standard thickness. Such lamellas are offered, for example, by Norway.
