Among the variety of floor coverings on the market, modular carpet tiles deserve special attention. This is a relatively new type of coating, but thanks to its properties, it is quickly gaining popularity.
Features and types of carpet tiles
Carpet mosaic tiles - wear-resistant carpet in the form of individual squares. Visually, they look like ordinary carpeting, but have a more dense, bendable base of polyvinyl chloride or fiberglass reinforced bitumen. This ensures the elasticity and strength of each tile, prevents them from slipping (even on the surface of the tile). Pile coatings are created from propylene or polyamide fibers of different heights.
The general technical characteristics of the coating are as follows:
- size - 50x50 cm .;
- weight - from 4 to 5 kg / m²;
- type of pile - split, tufted, loopback;
- pile size - from 1 to 8 mm;
- type of base - bitumen or polyvinyl chloride.
Depending on the application, carpet tiles can be household (for use at home), semi-commercial (for rooms with medium traffic), commercial (for public places).
Advantages and disadvantages
Floor carpet tiles are markedly different from other types of flooring. It has a number of advantages:
- Profitability. With the wear of individual sections, you can replace several squares, in contrast to the carpet, which has to be changed completely. When laying it, the waste amounts to no more than 3%.
- Wear resistance. The coating is designed for a long service life. It withstands the load of heavy furniture.
- Soundproofing. The tile muffles sound vibrations.
- Ease of styling. Squares are not difficult to lay in a room of any shape, even with many angles and protrusions. They are easy to install and just as easy to dismantle.
- Mobility. Tiles do not block access to wires or other communications hidden in the floor. Flat cable can be laid directly under the tile, and in the right place to bring it out.
- Harmlessness. Initially, carpet-mosaic tiles were designed for use only in residential premises, so it is non-toxic even under conditions of high temperature. It can be laid on the floor with heating, put heating devices on it.
- Ease of transportation. To deliver coverage, you do not need special transport and services of movers. Squares fit easily into the trunk of a car.
- Ability to create various patterns. Combining elements of different colors, you can independently create an ornament on the floor.
- Ease of care. The squares are easy to clean due to the cross section of the pile fibers. The hygiene of the coating is increased by the antibacterial agents that process it during the production process.
The disadvantages of tiling are few. These include its cost and poor tolerance of moisture and moisture. Carpet tiles are not recommended to be laid in rooms with high humidity, this spoils it and loses its properties.
Modular tiles are more expensive than other types of flooring, but considering its advantages, the price is justified.
How to choose?
The choice of tile is similar to the choice of carpet and depends on the purpose of the room where it will be laid.
In rooms with high traffic, squares with a hard pile and a thick base should be laid. Carpet tiles for the home should be softer and thinner. For residential premises, it is recommended to take a coating with a split pile.
To cover as long as possible, when choosing it, you need to pay attention to quality. Modern technologies allow the production of tiled carpets from high-tech material - anthron. Its fibers are made of special nylon. Pile from the anthron retains its original appearance for a long time, does not fade in the sun and prevents the ingress of dirt and dust.
Large manufacturers offer a wide range of carpet tiles. Everyone can choose the design of the coating, choose the squares of the desired thickness and texture. If you want to create a unique pattern on the floor, you can purchase elements of another geometric shape. Such tiles are less common and less common on sale, and laying such a coating takes longer.
When choosing a tile, it should be remembered that like any other finishing material, carpet-mosaic tiles must have a certificate of quality and environmental cleanliness.
Laying rules
Laying carpet tiles does not require special skills. It spreads on any flat, durable, clean and dry surface. The whole process consists of several stages:
- Marking the floor of the room. A straight line is drawn through the center of the room, parallel to the longest wall. Installation of the coating begins with the central row. This allows you to place the cut squares around the edges. Partitioning is especially important if you plan to lay squares of different colors.
- Tiles are laid out, starting from the entrance. The squares spread tightly to each other along the drawn line.
- To make the coating look solid, it is necessary to control the direction of the pile during installation. An arrow is drawn on each element on the reverse side, which determines the direction of its installation.
- After the central row is mounted, it is fixed with double-sided tape. Glue the tiles in the course of laying the next row. The latch is laid in the corner area, so that it fixes the corners of four squares at once. Following this technique, tiles spread throughout the room, except for the last rows.
- Extreme rows (along the walls) usually need pruning. After measuring the segments of the desired size, they are cut with a sharp knife under the ruler. Having fixed the last elements of the coating, their edges are hidden under the baseboard.
To stroke objects with complex geometric shapes, a template is preliminarily drawn on paper. Then it is transferred to the tile and cut out.
Interior Application
Carpet tiles for the floor - a universal coating that is used both in offices, shops, restaurants, and in residential premises. The color and pattern of the squares is selected according to the overall interior. In rooms with a large area, it is better to lay monophonic tiles or with a repeating print. This will help hide the borders at the junction of the squares.
Given the properties of the coating, it is recommended to use it in the design of a children's room. Carpet tiles are easily cleaned from dirt and stains that constantly appear on the nursery floor.
The modularity of the coating makes it possible, by combining squares of different colors, to create bright patterns on the floor (according to the mosaic principle), which can be changed if desired.
In the living room or bedroom, you can, alternating, lay squares of two colors, creating a "chessboard". If you lay on the outer edge of the tiles in a contrasting color - you get a border. To create more complex patterns, squares can be cut and arranged in zigzags around the perimeter or throughout the room.
Care
Carpet-mosaic tiles - the coating is durable and easy to use. To care for the coating does not cause difficulties, most manufacturers cover it with special antistatic agents.Thanks to this, the pile does not absorb dirt. It stays on the surface and is easy to clean.
It is recommended to clean carpet tiles with a brush or vacuum cleaner once a week. It is undesirable to use a washing vacuum cleaner without a special need. Moisture adversely affects the condition of the coating.
The stain that appears must be cleaned immediately, not allowing it to dry. Wipe the stains with a damp sponge, movements from edge to center in the direction of the pile. To eliminate old stains, you can use stain remover, strictly observing its instructions for use. In case of serious contaminations that are not amenable to self-cleaning, it is possible to dismantle individual squares and send them to dry cleaning.
To increase the service life of the coating, its elements can simply be interchanged. Replace worn squares with tiles that are located in less walkable places and are more slowly erased. It only takes a few minutes to replace the items.
Carpet-mosaic tiles - progressive flooring. Compared with rolled carpets, it has many advantages. With its help, it is easy to create coziness and an atmosphere of comfort, both in residential and office premises.
