Compared to others, the Gothic style in the interior stands out for its uniqueness and attractive aura of mystery and magic. Most often, rooms in this style are decorated either in the historical version of the mysterious Middle Ages, or referring to the era of Queen Victoria with her romanticization of black witchcraft and emphasized gloomy charm.
If a Gothic design is being developed, the basic rules for execution can be called the bizarre form, the sharpness of the silhouettes, the expressiveness of the accents inherent in the bygone centuries.
Features of the interior "Gothic"
The exact embodiment of the setting of the castle and Victorian mansions in the modern interior is associated with a sufficient number of difficulties, since the "past" is often an expensive pleasure. More often, games with Gothic succeed in spacious high rooms. But with a creative approach to decoration, arrangement of color accents, accessories, the Gothic design of an apartment or room is capable of amazingly “playing” in small spaces.
Elements that create a Gothic atmosphere, necessary for use:
- forged parts, narrow spiral staircases;
- vaulted ceiling, beam structures, "heavy" Victorian stucco molding;
- furniture and floors made of natural wood or elaborate imitation;
- antiques - worn leather chests, black leather chairs from the time of Queen Victoria, aged metal in the elements of furniture decor, bronze candlesticks, accessories, wrought iron lamps of simple or, conversely, elaborate lines;
- carved ornaments, colored stained-glass windows.
Windows, doors and arches
Windows, arches, door portals play a significant role if they create a Gothic style in the interior of a room. The main goal is not at all the costly transformation of the entire apartment into a castle, but the closest approach to the medieval or English neo-Gothic direction. This is quite possible if skillfully apply modern materials.
The Gothic effect of the Middle Ages is obtained by framing door portals and window openings with “living” stone.
Arches of various shapes, decorated with wooden carved panels or again with stone, are very harmonious in the “castle” style. The design provides for the presence of "lancet" narrow windows with stained glass without curtains.
The stained-glass windows of colored convex glass framed by lead tape look unusually and bewitching, as was done in the old days. Light bursting through them creates fabulous rainbow reflections, filling the space with an eternal sense of joy, even if the rooms are decorated in black, characteristic of the neo-Gothic of England.
The decor will look different if the room is decorated taking into account the atmosphere of “dark Victorian romance” and magic - on the elongated arched windows they use lattice, the so-called Tudor one, layout and blackout curtains from heavy expensive fabrics with lush elaborate drapery, brushes, fringe or braid .
Walls and ceilings
The modern antique design provides for the installation of ceilings with open rafters, if the height of the room allows, or wooden beams that delight the eye even in low rooms.
Decorative paintings on the ceiling are possible for both versions of the Gothic design. Convex stucco molding, cast details - a typical decor of a neo-Gothic version.
The basement area of the walls, the fireplace area is very often finished with stone imitating the rough texture of limestone, the noble smoothness of granite or the fabulousness of wild stone.
A good technique is to play on the contrast of textures, when part of the wall opens up old masonry or is decorated with a tapestry carpet with traditional scenes of medieval life. To decorate the walls in the "castle" version of the Gothic design, they usually use a natural gray-brown-beige palette with all shades of wood, earth and sand, stone, terracotta.
Design with black walls is a special feature of the neo-Gothic room. In combination with a pearl-white ceiling, black heavy furniture, this option makes a magical impression.
Wallpaper decoration, drapery of walls with textiles - a mandatory feature of Victorian Gothic. Apply panels with a pronounced texture, a clear pattern, velvety surfaces. Black and graphite background with a faded gray pattern creates a real Gothic flavor. In addition to black, deep tones of cherry and burgundy, the mysterious violet, bottle green, muted blue and blood red are allowed.

A mesmerizing and highly noticeable detail of an apartment decorated in the Gothic style of any era is a fireplace decorated with shelves that place copper and bronze dishes, kitchen utensils. Or, if they “create” a design in Victorian style, they put twisted luxurious candelabra, mantel clocks, and porcelain figurines.
Harmony and integrity will reign in space, if you pay special attention to the selection of furniture. In Gothic, it stands out primarily for its massiveness. If the apartment is "building a castle", the furniture contours can be simple, and the decor is rude. Or, conversely, when the preference is given to Victorian Gothic, the design is usually whimsical, complex with sophisticated details. Carved tall cupboards, paneled double-wardrobes, luxurious headboards, high backs of chairs are appropriate here.
Accessories
The modern Gothic style will transform any space if the design of the apartment includes stained glass inserts with traditional colors for the medieval or neo-Gothic style and pattern. They are successfully used not only on windows, but also on closed walls, using internal lighting in the design of cabinets and doors.
Victorian Gothic suggests an abundance of accessories, when decorative objects of the “past days” made of metal and wood, carved mantelpieces, figurines in the form of scary gargoyles and magical paraphernalia in the form of crystal balls, fancy lamps give the room a special charm.
Small and huge mirrors in luxurious frames are organic, similar to paintings, stone ashtrays, decor items made of bronze and silver, wonderful caskets, pouffes.
