Many want to see sparkling and shine in the house. A simple way to achieve this is to decorate the interior with glossy paint.
Colorful Glitter: Acquaintance
Having decided to use paint, you have to make a choice according to several parameters. For example, painted surfaces will be matte or glossy.
Acrylic paint or any other consists of a colored pigment and resin. A large percentage of pigment creates a matte finish. The predominance of resins makes it glossy.
When the paint dries, the solvent evaporates, the resin hardens, and the remaining glossy paint turns into a durable waterproof coating film. Such properties make the glossy mixture preferable in rooms with high humidity or frequent mechanical stresses (for example, friction). This is an option for fans of cleanliness, endlessly wiping and laundering an apartment.
Although glossy paint coatings are easy to keep clean, because dust or dirt does not adhere well to them, they are most often chosen for decorating small rooms, because the gloss visually increases the space, and the background becomes deeper and more mysterious.
Gloss painting, however, requires a perfectly flat surface of the walls or ceiling: the slightest cavities or tubercles will be clearly visible. Therefore, the preparatory stage when working with such formulations is the most important.
What are glossy paints?
There are several popular types that vary in degree of strength, cost, purpose.
Alkyd
The binder component is alkyd resin. Are applied on metal, wooden, plastered surfaces. Alkyd paint is resistant to light, high or low temperatures, non-toxic, waterproof.
Urethane-alkyd compounds create a glossy surface in different colors and shades with high abrasion resistance. Alkyd paint is usually applied in two layers.
Acrylic
Dry quickly and odorlessly, reliably adhere to any surface. Acrylic glossy mixture does not fade in the sun, does not fade. The connecting element is the resin of the same name. These paints give an elastic, durable coating, resistant to moisture, low or high temperatures, corrosion, ultraviolet. This is the best gloss paint for wood.
Many fans have black glossy acrylic paint. She is painted with plastic, metal, glass, wood. It is applied in two to three layers on a clean fat-free surface. The black gloss of a car or a Gothic-style building is super-effective, but troublesome: every speck of dust is visible on it.
Latex
They have excellent water-repellent properties: walls and ceilings covered with them can be washed. Painting of brick, drywall, plaster does not require special qualifications, and the layer dries completely in about an hour.
Oil
They consist of a base - drying oils - and diluents: turpentine, solvent, white spirit. Oil harmoniously combines with wood, stone, and other materials. Time-tested, traditional budget option for the floor.The only negative is a strong chemical smell, so you need to work in a well-ventilated area, preferably in the warm season or outdoors. White oil paint turns yellow and dims over time.
Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA)
The most budget option. Despite this, they are environmentally friendly, resistant to sunlight, fats and oils. However, with time they are washed off with water and lose their luster.
Silicone
The binder of the elements is emulsified silicone resin, therefore, after drying, the painted layer repels water, but allows water vapor and air to pass through. Suitable for mineral surfaces, compatible with mineral and latex paints.
Enamel
The most glossy paints that are used for indoor and outdoor use. Available in a wide color range, so it is easy to select for ceilings, walls, furniture.
Advantages are quick drying, resistance to corrosion and ultraviolet, complete waterproofness.
Enamel is applied only to a completely dried surface. For example, if you cover wet wood with them, after some time bubbles will appear on the surface, and the applied layer will easily peel off.
Polyurethane enamel is used for exterior and interior use. Before application, both components must be mixed and mixed. Staining occurs in two stages. Enamel dries completely in two weeks, and a beautiful glossy surface is formed. Such paints are durable and mechanically and chemically strong.
Emulsion
The most popular universal glossy mixture for decorating walls or ceilings. It is ecologically safe; it does not emit odors during the drying process. Dries in an hour and a half.
Water-based paints are called emulsion paints, so they are diluted with water, while not dissolving, but form a stable emulsion. After drying, a colored glossy film forms on the surface.
Benefits:
- fire and environmental safety;
- lack of chemical smell;
- quick drying;
- ease of washing tools and hands after work.
But the emulsion base can not be applied to a surface painted with adhesive compositions. Before work on metal, the surface is first primed so that corrosion does not occur.
They compare favorably with matte in several consumer properties: they are washed without rinsing and have a wide color gamut. This gives room for creativity: the designers create an interior volumetric texture with different effects for decorating walls or ceilings. Glossy coatings are highly durable, able to protect the treated surface from the occurrence of small cracks.
What is glossy paint used for?
Interiors, cars, dishes, decorative objects can be brilliant. Glossy paint fits perfectly on metal, glass, wood, concrete, plastic. Most in demand in the design of rooms: for floor, ceiling, walls.
For the ceiling, white glossy paint is most often used. The painted ceiling becomes as it were, does not press, so this is the best solution for rooms with low ceilings. In the kitchen, glossy paint for the ceiling is necessary, since steam, soot, and smoke are steadily present in this area. Alkyd, adhesive, silicate, emulsion compositions are used.
Gloss does not absorb moisture, so such a glossy paint is used for walls in bathrooms or bathrooms, if you do not want to mess with the tiles.
Paint for the floor in the apartment is used infrequently, because scratches, stains, spots are clearly visible on the shiny coating.
Glossy paint for concrete floors is acrylic, polyurethane enamels, urethane-alkyd compounds. Acrylic-silicone mixes for concrete are not very suitable because of their low abrasion resistance.
Strong shine has alkyd enamel. It is used for exterior and interior use, painted metal and wooden furniture, other surfaces.
Material for creativity
Glossy acrylic art paints combine the properties of oil and watercolor, depending on the degree of dilution with water. Unlike oil paints, acrylic does not smell and dries much faster. They paint dishes, they are used as decor for furniture with a plain background.
So that the paint does not dry out, water is not added to the jar. It’s better to work with a palette that any glassware can serve. For acrylic, this is better than plastic products sold in stores.
How to work with gloss?
Surface preparation for painting involves the following steps:
- removal of old coating;
- sanding paper;
- filling cracks, cracks, joints;
- purification;
- primer.
The appearance of the future coating with gloss depends on the quality of the preparatory work, therefore, special care and leisure are required.
After that, paint is applied in one or two layers to a perfectly flat surface: with a brush in the corners, with a roller over large areas or with a spray gun over a small area or individual parts.
Enamel is applied on a primed surface in a single layer.
Thus, glossy paint can be considered an economical material: a liter of material is enough to paint about ten square meters.
