Cabinet doors: modern solutions for design and convenience (22 photos)

A hundred years ago, the closet was a real work of art. Each piece of furniture of the eminent master could be admired for a long time: chiseled legs, curls of wood, openwork handles and carved glass in the doors. Such a cabinet was put in a prominent place, decorating with knitted napkins and embroidery. Now furniture fashion is trying to cater to the rapid pace of life of a modern person and remove him from his path, hiding all protruding parts as much as possible and practically merging with the wall. However, the doors still remain in sight. They got all the attention of designers. The free flight of design thought drilled holes in the doors, replaced them with glass, curtains or blinds, tried all possible opening mechanisms and finally added decorations using decoupage technique. We can only choose our option, pleasing to the eye and the most suitable for the interior of the room.

Sliding door design

Sliding wardrobes are currently at the peak of popularity. Following the requirements of minimalism, they almost merge with the wall, leaving only the doors in sight. And here a great variety awaits us. The doors for the sliding wardrobe are traditionally sliding, the differences are in the opening mechanisms and the design of the doors. The most popular wardrobes:

  • with hanging doors;
  • with a mirror;
  • with radius doors;
  • with folding doors.

There are also many materials for the execution of doors: chipboard, MDF, mirror, mirror with oracal, natural wood. Doors with a combination of mirrors and bamboo or rattan inserts are popular. To decorate the facade of the door, a mirror is often used.

For cabinets, a 4 mm thick mirror is used, which can be either ordinary silver or bronze. On the reverse side, a special protective film is glued to it. If the mirror breaks, all the fragments will remain on this film.

Doors for a sliding wardrobe with a mirror favorably expand the space of a small room. They are installed in the hallways, bedrooms. The mirror can be combined with plastic or wood inserts. An interesting effect is provided by a mirror if it is pasted over on the back with an oracular film, plain or with a pattern.

Sandblasting will allow you to apply a picture or ornament to the mirror. Sandblasting masters are able to turn a mirror into a three-dimensional picture by alternating different processing techniques. Fusing is another glass processing technology. A volumetric pattern on a mirror or a glass door is obtained by soldering multi-colored pieces with strong heating. Glass is quite expensive, but it looks good.

Cabinets with a hanging system for doors have recently appeared on the Russian market. The mechanism for them is installed on the cabinet lid. The absence of a frame allows you to make large-sized doors. Modern closers allow them to open smoothly and silently. The suspension system can be equipped with an electric drive and the doors will open automatically.

Differences of the suspension system from the standard mechanism are as follows:

  • the doors are located in front of the closet, and not in it;
  • the mechanism does not take up space inside the cabinet;
  • doors are designed for heavy loads, which allows you not to save on decor;
  • the top rail is mounted on the cabinet lid;
  • closed doors completely cover the frame.

The suspension system creates the effect of soaring doors. In combination with a mirror, this gives zero gravity to the entire interior.

Sliding wardrobe with radius doors

Radius doors allow you to move away from the usual straight lines and make the cabinet facade concave, convex or wavy. Smooth façade lines make the cabinet look easier. This interesting design decision also has practicality, as the cabinet does not have sharp corners. Caring parents will take this note and install a radiused closet in the nursery. Convex sliding wardrobe will successfully fit into a shallow niche, where the usual would not be functional. Radius cabinet has its drawbacks:

  • complicated design is more expensive than usual;
  • high strength profile is used;
  • replacing one part of the mechanism will require contacting specialists.

Perhaps a broken part will have to be made anew, since the cabinets are made to fit the customer's dimensions. To order a wardrobe with radius doors, it is better to contact companies that have their own production. In the event of a breakdown, they will be able to make the part themselves.

Folding wardrobe doors

Folding doors always attract attention with their unusual design. Two-leaf doors are called a “book”, four-leaf doors got the apt name “accordion”. Folding doors are convenient where there is not enough space for swinging and sliding. All folding door models have a similar design.

The door leaf consists of equal parts and is opened using a suspension mechanism. Folding doors for the wardrobe turn it into a dressing room, as it completely opens the facade.

Doors for built-in wardrobe

Despite the general fashion on sliding wardrobes, built-in wardrobes do not give up their positions and still cherish our things in niches and piers. Their persistent popularity is promoted by:

  • a simple and centuries-old door opener;
  • simple replacement of the mechanism that does not require a specialist call;
  • the impossibility of installing sliding doors in niches.

The price of fitted wardrobes is an order of magnitude lower than that of a wardrobe. With the money saved, you can turn an ordinary boring cabinet door into an original interior decoration.

The facade of the cabinet door can be made glass, and ordinary glass can be replaced with frosted, with a picture, color, stained glass. Also, the glass door can be painted manually with stained glass or acrylic paints. If you are unsure of your artistic abilities, stick a self-adhesive film on the inside.

If the cabinet is in a niche and the ventilation in the room is weak, you can replace the standard facade with a lattice. Then things or products will not get a musty smell. There are many options for decorating in the form of a lattice. The louvred doors for the cabinet look beautiful. Decoration of cabinet doors with natural wood slats looks elegant and noble. If it is not possible to use wooden slats, take plastic to match the color of the tree. One-piece plastic cabinet doors can be replaced with lattice-matching plastic.
