Pros and cons of a screw foundation

To date, foundations on screw piles are extremely relevant in suburban construction. Such a foundation is relevant for small houses, the construction of which takes place on unstable, heaving soils, as well as areas with characteristic signs of a high level of groundwater. This method of bookmarking is not replaceable during construction on complex, unstable landscapes.

In order to correctly understand the structure of the construction of such a foundation, it is necessary to imagine what the pile itself is. This is, in principle, a simple pipe. The difference lies in the blade welded onto it, which can have a different configuration. Such screw pipes are screwed into the ground until the problem layer ends, and are fixed in this position. As a result, foundation laying can occur on top of the heaving upper layer. After installation of all piles, they are leveled by cutting, the foundation is poured with concrete mortar and the surface is coated with an anti-corrosion compound.

Advantages

This type of foundation pouring easily competes with conventional standard methods and has several advantages.

  1. It does not require the use of heavy types of construction equipment and various work related to the extraction of problem soil and surface leveling.
  2. the choice of a place for construction is not limited to the presence of difficult sites. Such, for example, as large trees growing near the object or finding it on different slopes.
  3. the ability to attach additional structures to the main building of various types.
  4. it takes several days to bookmark, which is very convenient. Often, the efficiency of the project depends on the speed of the work.
  5. work on this technology can be carried out at any temperature and does not depend on precipitation.

disadvantages

The main disadvantage is the corrosion of the metal base. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the quality of the metal of which the pile is made. Since, in order to save money, many companies use low-quality material for the production of screw piles.

Therefore, you should pay attention to the main characteristics of screw piles:

  1. the shaft of the screw pile is made of a new solid pipe i.e. piles should not have welds;
  2. with a pile diameter of 108 mm, the wall metal thickness should not be less than 4 mm, and the thickness of the propeller blade should be at least 5 mm and the blade dimeter itself should be at least 300 mm;
  3. the blades of a screw pile must be of the correct shape;
  4. the screw blade must be welded to the pipe with good quality, otherwise, under load during tightening, it may come off or be damaged;
  5. piles must be sandblasted (surface preparation process before applying a special anti-corrosion coating). Companies that manufacture piles in a “artisanal” way do not sandblast;
  6. quality anti-corrosion coating. The life of the pile-screw foundation depends on it.

Conclusion: the screw method of bookmarking is a quick and practical option that is increasingly being used by specialists. In addition to the above positive aspects, it has a high rate of bearing capacity. When screwing the piles, the soil does not loosen, but is compacted in screw grooves, which increases the stability and endurance of the foundation part. Professionals have long appreciated the advantages of this method and apply it to various types of objects for any purpose.
