Removing old tiles

How to remove a tile from a wall

So it's time to remove the old tiles from the walls. No, do not be afraid, there is nothing particularly difficult. Although the process is quite laborious, but quite feasible. Let's figure out what nuances you need to know and how to remove tiles from the wall correctly.

It will be very good if there is a hammer. This is optional, but greatly simplifies the work. What tools and overalls do we need?

  1. hammer;
  2. chisel;
  3. hammer drill (preferably);
  4. goggles and a mask / respirator (optional).

Preparatory work

First of all, you need to put a plastic film or some kind of wide rag on the floor. This will help in the future to easily remove old material and other garbage. Furniture (if it comes to the bathroom - sink and toilet) is better to cover with a rag, so as not to stain. Also, be sure to use glasses before work, because large pieces of material can accidentally get into your eyes. A respirator is not often used, if desired.

How to remove tiles from a wall without a perforator

We divide the whole process into three stages.

  1. Dismantling works begin from the upper tier and go to the lower. Take any sprayer and treat the trowel joints with water. We take a chisel, put it in the center of the tile and hit it hard with a hammer. A crack appeared in which it is necessary to drive the chisel deeper, while gently tapping with a hammer. Next, use it as a lever and tear the tile from the surface. It is worth remembering that not all tiles will separate completely, some will disappear in parts.
  2. Next, proceed to remove the rest of the tile. The procedure is approximately the same: we take a chisel, put it under the edge of the tile (of course, tapping it with a hammer) and use it as a lever. The remaining solution must be cleaned with a chisel and a hammer. Even small pieces of mortar are unacceptable, otherwise the new tile will not lie down normally!
  3. All the tiles have been dismantled, but what about the mastic on which it was attached? It can be softened (for example, by a fan heater) and scraped off with a scraper.

Using a hammer drill

Removing tiles using a punch is easy. The tool is able to inflict a lot of light blows, thereby protecting the wall from damage. After all, manually calculating the exact strength of the blow does not always work. The tool is driven under the tile and gradually penetrates deep into. It is then used as a lever and tears off the old finishing material.

What you need to know when working?
  • If you work without a punch - be careful with the surface of the wall, try not to damage it.
  • The exit places of pipes and fittings require special attention, there is no need to rush here. Gently tap the chisel, because otherwise you risk knocking out a cavity on the wall surface. The defect will need to be putty, and this is an additional (in our case, also meaningless) work.
  • The old solution must be removed completely, without residue. The better this is done, the stronger the new solution will lie.
  • How to remove a single tile without damaging neighboring ones? To do this, take a spatula and remove the grout around the perimeter. Next, we take an electric drill and drill a dozen holes and easily break the tile. Additionally, you can take a glass cutter and draw it diagonally. Material will easily crack on such lines.

What if I put a new tile on an old one?

Yes, please, but some conditions must be met. First, take the construction level and make sure that the surface is perfectly flat in all directions. Secondly, if suddenly a single old tile lags behind the surface, then it must be fixed before finishing a new one. And with the nuances of laying tiles on the wall, you can get acquainted here. Perhaps this is all. Have a good work!
