Tile flooring is very popular today. The material has several advantages, but above all, it is appreciated for its resistance to moisture and temperature extremes. A wide variety of colors and textures can give an elegant look to any room. Tiles vary in species, each of which has unique features. Read in more detail in our section "Types of Ceramic Tiles".
Choosing the right tile
Finishing the floor with tiles begins with the right choice of material. It is necessary to highlight separately some important points that can affect the quality of work.
- Firstly, tiles can sometimes differ slightly in size (literally a few millimeters). But even so, the seams between the material will vary in width and steps. How to detect marriage? It's simple, you need to put a few tiles first end, then sideways on any flat surface. If the top of the stack is flat, then everything is in order. Possible deviations are always indicated on the manufacturer's packaging. The task is to verify the accuracy of the written information.
- Secondly, the shape of the tile also does not always have perfectly even proportions, which in the end result will affect the curvature of the seams. How to check? Take nine tiles and on a flat surface fold one large rectangle out of them (three per row). Then look at the gaps between them. The permissible norm is 1 millimeter. But it is better, of course, when there are none at all.
- Thirdly, sometimes it happens that a tile has a concave or curved surface. What are we doing in this case? We take a ruler or any other tool with a smooth edge and fit to the material. The maximum allowable gap value is 0.5 millimeters. Try to check all boxes of goods before purchase. If in one batch there are both normal and defective materials, then this is a sign of a poor-quality batch.
- Fourth, tile thickness is also important. We check as follows: on a flat surface, lay several tiles in a row and apply a ruler on top. If there are no gaps between the surface - everything is in order.
- Fifth, the surface of the material should be flat and on the back of the surface. But why, if these defects all evenly hide the solution? It's simple, such protruding elements increase the consumption of adhesive and complicate the work. The verification method is the same as with the front part.
And last, if the tile is glazed, then be sure to pay attention to the uniform coloring of the material, the absence of smudges and the whiteness of the edges. Also, when buying material, pay attention that the tile belongs to the same batch both in caliber and in tone.
Designation on the packaging of tiles
Typically, the packaging has various pictograms that can briefly talk about the material. If the same icon is specified twice, then this characteristic is increased.
Direct tiling
There are many styling schemes, but three of them are considered to be the most popular: “run-up”, “seam-to-seam” and “diagonal”. Each method has its own characteristics.
