Shelving in the interior: partition and storage system
One of us needs to allocate a separate zone in a small room, the other, on the contrary, it is important to divide the space in a large studio apartment, the third just need additional storage systems. Whatever situation you are in, a rack as a partition will be the best solution. It will effectively divide the space, become a capacious storage system and at the same time it will not require serious financial costs and time for the organization of the partition. In a room with one window, it is impossible to build a solid wall to divide the space into zones, because then one of the functional segments will be without a source of natural light. A "translucent" rack without facades and often without side walls will be an excellent solution for a small room. In a spacious room you can not be limited in choosing the model of the rack - use the most daring and original solutions. And the designers offer us a lot of options for creating modern shelving. It is with such projects that we would like to introduce you using a selection of 100 shelving models used in a wide variety of rooms.
Features of racks used as partitions
Modern furniture stores for residential premises offer an incredibly wide selection of shelving, not to mention the possibilities of manufacturing such storage systems to order. "Translucent" models without rear and side panels, facades and additional partitions - only horizontal shelves on partitions that are attached to the floor and ceiling. Or more thorough furniture options - with facades at the bottom built into the doorway. Or maybe mobile models that can be moved depending on the situation and mood of the interior? Do not count the options. And they all have several advantages, being used as a partition.
So, the obvious advantages of shelving-partitions include the following:
Universality of design. You can choose a model for both a small room and for spacious rooms. The rack is easy to fit into almost any stylistic direction in interior design - it is only important to choose the right material and design for the design. Another aspect of the versatility of the rack is the ability to use in rooms with different functional loads. In the children's room, such a storage system is useful for toys, books and boxes with games, in the bedroom and living room it can be used as a home library or for storage of wardrobe items, as a partition between the kitchen and the dining room, the shelf is useful for storing utensils and kitchen accessories.
"Translucency" of the structure. If you choose a model without a back wall and sides, consisting only of open shelves and jumpers, then the "transparency" of the partition will be ensured. Such a product can be used even in a small room with a small amount of natural light.
Democratic cost. The shelving partition can be erected independently, having a minimum set of tools and skills. But even in finished form, open shelves on lintels will be inexpensive, given the versatility of this piece of furniture.
Quick and easy installation of the finished product. Installing a finished design or assembling from a set of shelves, jumpers and accessories purchased in a store will not be difficult even for those who are engaged in such for the first time. The simplicity of the design, however, does not detract from its strength and stability, durability and practicality.
Partition shelving functions
The obvious options for shelving, which are used as partitions in the premises, include the division of space (zoning) and acting as storage systems. In addition, the rack can act as an accent element of the interior, attracting universal attention and distracting from unsuccessful elements of the situation. Also, the shelving partition can act as a decorative element, decorating the interior, bringing notes of originality with the help of creative design.
Zoning
If you need to highlight a functional segment in a small room with one window, then using a “translucent” rack structure is the best option for zoning. Unfortunately, many of our compatriots are forced to find the possibility of distinguishing separate zones in small spaces. For example, in a one-room apartment, it is often necessary to separate the parents rest area and the segment for the child’s sleep and games.
In spacious rooms, shelving partitions are most often needed for zoning the space without using solid walls. You can even use a low rack - the illusion of separation of space will remain, and the visual volume of the room and the amount of lighting will not change. But in some cases, a shelving-partition from floor to ceiling is required - such a zoning technique will not become an obstacle in a spacious room with several windows.
Storage systems
The advantage of partitions created in the form of shelving is that they can be used as a storage system. In some cases, it is this option that becomes decisive in the choice of furniture for the interior, even without the need to create a fence of a functional segment. Not to list everything that can be stored on the shelves of the rack - from traditional books to collectibles.
Depending on the room in which the shelving partition is used and which functional areas are shared, its content also depends. Storage of books is one of the most common options for filling storage systems in the form of shelving. There is no reason to hide books behind facades, in the bowels of cabinets or drawers. Beautiful roots of books will not only help you quickly find the right work, but also decorate the interior of the room, bring color diversity to the design of a room with a neutral palette.
If in the studio apartment the work and dining area of the kitchen-dining room is separated from the living room by a rack-partition, then it will be equally effective to store items that may be needed in all the listed functional segments. It can be beautiful dishes, cookbooks, household appliances or simply decorative objects that harmoniously fit into the created atmosphere.
Another variant of the dividing partition for the kitchen area in the common room is the superstructure of the rack above the peninsula or bar counter. Practical from the point of view of its main purpose, the kitchen peninsula becomes part of the partition. Usually adding in the form of a rack comes down to the construction of concise open shelves above the countertop.
In the spacious bathroom, the partition wall can be used to separate the water treatment area and the toilet. Such a storage system can accommodate not only bath accessories and accessories for various water and sanitary procedures, but also a supply of towels for the whole family.
In the bedroom, the shelving can be used as a partition separating the dressing area. Obviously, the shelves of such a storage system will occupy the wardrobe of the owners. The rack can be made transparent or use the wall, but from the sleeping area - you can hang a picture or a TV.
Protective function
In addition to the obvious options, including the use of the rack as a storage system and the subject of zoning, this type of partition can also perform a protective function.For example, located near the stairs, the shelving partition not only zones the space, but also acts as a railing, i.e. protective screen for those who climb or descend the stairs. A similar function is performed by the rack located on the upper level of the room with several functional tiers.
Design options for racks for zoning space
For the manufacture of shelves, the following materials are most often used:
- natural wood;
- MDF, particleboard, fiberboard;
- metal;
- glass;
- PVC and polyurethane;
- acrylic.
The simplest, but at the same time incredibly functional version of the shelving is a laconic design of shelves with partitions, without a back wall and sidewalls. Such a model provides full access to storage items from any direction, does not clutter up the space, only partially blocks the distribution of light. The universality of this model is that it can be used equally effectively in large and small spaces, in rooms with different functional loads and stylistic design.
Partitions with partial overlap of space were no less widespread. Most often, the closed part of the partition (monolithic or storage system with facades) is located in the lower part - the height is determined by your desire to create a particular level of dimming in the area to be separated. And the upper part is a translucent structure with open shelves.
If the lower part of this design is wide enough, and the partition itself is small in height, then the upper part does not need to be fixed to the ceiling. The structure will be reliably located indoors, without creating a threat of overturning. Otherwise (and especially in homes with young children), it is necessary to use the fastening of the supports of the upper tier of the rack to the ceiling. Fixing the shelves to the ceiling will help to achieve the safe location of even a very thin rack with a large height.
Portable models of shelving partitions are very popular. The advantage of these small-sized structures is the possibility of changing the location of the partition (suitable for studio apartments), the absence of the need for dismantling when moving (relevant for those who periodically change their location). For example, in a studio apartment during a party, you can simply slide the shelving against the wall, and at night ensure separation of the sleeping segments for guests staying overnight. Often these shelving models are equipped with castors with locks.
Office-style shelving is often used in living spaces. For example, in a children's room for two or more children, you can distinguish between work and sleeping places with low office shelving. In addition to obvious zoning, these racks serve as excellent storage systems for books, toys, school and sports supplies.
Often, as partitions in spacious rooms, double-sided fireplaces are used - hearths, in which the dance of fire can be observed from both shared functional zones. A logical continuation of such a partition would be a rack. It can be "translucent" or deaf - it all depends on how solid your partition should be.
The tandem of the shelving-partition and video zone is even more popular. Modern TVs are quite thin and weigh not so much - a stable shelving with a rear wall is enough to combine storage systems with arranging a place to watch movies and shows in the living room or bedroom.
Shelf-partition with swivel shelves and sections is difficult from the point of view of construction, but practical design. You can use a monolithic, at first glance, design equally efficient on both sides - in two functional areas. For example, the TV inside the rack can be viewed from the bedroom and living room.
